His The One Best Way was one of four finalists for the Global Business Book Award for biography, co-sponsored by the Financial Times of London and the management consulting firm of Booz-Allen. The Man Who Knew Infinity is now in its fifth paperback printing. His fourth book, High Season: How One French Riviera Town Has Seduced Travelers for Two Thousand Years, is due to be published in June 2002 by Viking Press.
His articles and essays have been published in magazines such as The Sciences, American Health, and The New York Times Magazine. His book reviews have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and Psychology Today. For many years, he taught writing in the Publications Design Program at the University of Baltimore. Since September 1999, Kanigel has been professor of science writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and administrator of its new Graduate Program in Science Writing. A Kanigel talk on Vintage Reading was broadcast on C-Span's "About Books" in August 1998.

This book got its start from a column Kanigel wrote for seven years, published by the Baltimore Evening Sun and the Los Angeles Times. It includes 80 two- to three-page essays on books he chose, as the author says in his introduction, for his benefit rather than the reader's. So, the choices are somewhat eclectic, ranging from Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady to Isadora Duncan's My Life. The essays are light and amusing. Each includes a bit of information about the author, some plot outline, and a reason to read the book. A professional reviewer, Kanigel occasionally chose books to review for the Baltimore Sun that weren't new. He gathered those columns into this cozy and enlightening book. His divisions are revealing: everyone's classics; title appearing on many a list for burning; one-of-a-kinds; best-sellers; those dealing with the realm of the spirit. Because they were columns, their format and brevity sometimes are of a muchness: a boffo opening sentence and a catchy close. But Kanigel takes another look at titles as varied as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Nana; The Microbe Hunters and A Bell for Adano; and he makes us want to pick them up again and read what he read. He shares the odd little fact, like how caryatids got their name or what a sonata is. He offers a flash, now and then, of spot-on description (Malthus as "intellectual history's Gloomy Gus"). Great Fun! Breezy, Entertaining, and Informative.

This volume is a collection of book reviews originally written for a newspaper -- except that instead of reviewing current books, the author has reviewed books dating from ancient Babylonia (the Epic of Gilgamesh) to the very recent past. These essays are truly enjoyable introductions to the books that everyone is supposed to have read but hasn't. They may sate your appetite or, instead, spur you to check out the originals. (They inspired me to tackle Gibbon's Decline and Fall.) At least you will know why these works are considered classics, even if you decide to pass.
The author is knowledgeable, but also concise and breezy, and has a light, humorous touch. If you are a graduate student in Comparative Literature working on a dissertation on deconstructionism, this book may not do anything for you. For this reasonably well-educated general reader, though, it was a pleasure.

Vintage Reading: From Plato to Bradbury, A Personal Tour of Some of the World's Best Books is an anthology of 80 book reviews that the author wrote over a seven-year period for three separate newspapers. Most are around 750 words. The reviews are well written and engrossing.

The book is broken into nine sections:

"On Everyone's List of Literary Classics" in which 12 books are reviewed. Two examples: Kim by Rudyard Kipling and My Antonia by Willa Cather.

"On Many a List for Burning: Heretics, Subversives, Demagogues" in which 7 books are reviewed. Two examples: Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler and Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed.

"Books That Shaped the Western World" in which 11 books are reviewed. Two examples: Essays by Montaigne and Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville;

"Making Hard Work Easy: The Great Popularizers" in which 10 books are reviewed. Two examples: Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead and The Greek Way by Edith Hamilton.

"Not Robinson Crusoe, Not Brave New World: Lesser Known Classics" in which 7 books are reviewed. Two examples: A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe and Roughing It by Mark Twain.

"Lighter Fare: Good Reads, Best Sellers" in which 8 books are reviewed. Two examples: A Bell for Adano by John Hersey and The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.

"But I Know What I Like: On Aesthetics and Style" in which 5 books are reviewed. Two examples: The Seven Lamps of Architecture by John Ruskin and The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form by Kenneth Clark.

"One-of-a-Kinds" in which 9 books are reviewed. Two examples: A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf and The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn

"The Realm of the Spirit: Holy and Human" in which 11 books are reviewed. Two examples: The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton and Night by Elie Wiesel.

This is a math text with the primary goal of teaching students the mathematical concepts necessary for other courses dealing with finance, insurance, and investments. Because this is a problem-solving course, students will have to demonstrate an understanding that goes beyond the numbers spit out by a calculator. This understanding comes from recognizing and diagramming the structure of the problem so that the application of a formula is natural and not just an educated guess. Our goal is for students to understand well those few underlying principles that play out in nearly every finance and interest problem.

After years of experience teaching this subject, we have developed certain simplifying techniques that have helped many students to have a successful experience in their studies of finance and interest. One of the most interesting principles involving the numbering of payments we have named the Fence Post Principle. This tricky little idea shows up in all walks of life, but especially in business matters. We have also found that the use of the effective interest rate makes calculations involving general case annuities just another annuity calculation without the frustrations inherent in the equivalent payment method. Students are often frustrated trying to decide whether an exercise requires present value or future value, so we teach them how to recognize certain scenarios and clue words that simplify the decision process. Most of our students reach the point at which they always get the present value/future value issue correct.

This text is intended to open the door of financial understanding to many other academic majors besides business, accounting, and the actuarial sciences. Over the years we have received considerable feedback from former students who have expressed appreciation for how this course prepared them for dealing with personal financial matters and investments. Although there are many exercises dealing with business and finance, there are many others that deal with practical issues and the profound effect of interest on the value of money. In fact, the time value of money is the basic principle underlying everything we do in finance. Those who grasp the significance of this principle are not surprised when confronted with a situation where $100 cash can actually be a larger piece of money than, say, $108 located a year from now. To emphasize this principle, we have coined a phrase called the Golden Rule of Finance: Monies cannot be added or reconciled unless they are valued at the same point in time. This concept drives the development of formulas and equations of value so pieces of money can be moved both forward and backward on the time line. Once the student understands where on the time line he or she wants the money, it is an easy matter to pick the right mathematical tool to get it there.

We have tried to personalize the exercises by using first names of individuals as the players in the finance problems to be solved. Most of the names of companies used are fictitious, with a few exceptions. Using the names of real companies can lead to misunderstandings if the data are not factually representative of the financial status of those companies. All problems (even a few with names of real companies) have been made up to serve the same function as any other laboratory learning situation. They are as realistic as possible, but your day-to-day financial dealings will of course be somewhat different. Interest rates are always in a state of flux, so rates in problems and examples that seem a little high for today's market may be too low in a year or two. In the summer of 2003 the prime rate had dropped to 4.00%, an impossibly low figure from the perspective of the mid-1990s, when it hovered around 8% to 9%. Adaptability of the Text

We envision that this text can be adapted for use at three different levels. They could be identified as sophomore, junior, and senior; but basic, intermediate, and advanced give a better picture. The basic level would serve as a first course aimed at an audience that certainly includes, besides others, finance, management, and accounting majors. The intermediate level would provide a good background and introduction for those headed toward the actuary and insurance professions as well as financial management. The advanced level provides the additional opportunity to apply stochastic processes to finance and interest theory.

Basic Level

For those who wish to cover this material at a sophomore level in a business or accounting program, the theory sections can be omitted without loss. For this use the authors presuppose a working knowledge of only basic algebra, arithmetic, and percents, but nothing more than what would be covered in a couple of years of high school math.

Content: Cover Chapters 1 through 8, but omit the theory sections 1.10, 2.6, 3.3, 3.8, 3.9, and 5.7. This level should concentrate on the Concept and Calculation sections of the exercise sets.

Intermediate Level

Those using this text at the intermediate level would need at least an introductory-level calculus background that covered differentiation and integration along with limits and summation notation.

Content: Cover the basic material in Chapters 1 and 2 in about three class periods, cover all of Chapters 3 through 8, and four sections of Chapter 9. Give special attention to the theory sections 1.10, 2.6, 3.3, 3.8, 3.9, 5.7, 9.1-9.4. These theory of interest sections are very important to those headed toward the actuary field. Programmable calculators should be used for the Chapter 9 material. This level should plan to do a representative amount of the Concept and Calculation exercises but should do all of the Theory and Extension exercises.

Advanced Level

Those at the advanced level should not only have a Calculus prerequisite but a mathematics statistics class with adequate experience with the normal distribution from an applied as well as a theoretical standpoint. This material will assume the student can handle expected value, variance, covariance, and the lognormal distribution.

Content: Cover the same material as the intermediate level with only 1 or 2 class periods on the basic material of Chapters 1 and 2, plus all of Sections 9.5-9.9. This level should plan to do a limited amount of the Concept and Calculation exercises, all of the Theory and Extension exercises, and all of the exercises in Chapter 9.

Notation

There is a fair amount of diversity of notation among finance, investment, and actuary work. Our goal in choosing notation was two fold: (1) Keep it as simple as possible for the student learning this material, and (2) use dual notation where possible to make future transitions to other texts as smooth as possible. We have used all the basic interest theory notation that is familiar to those in the actuarial field but have tried to use more user-friendly notation in areas where the very compact methods of notation are easily forgotten with disuse. As an example of this, in Chapter 9 we use a notation for present value of a variable payment annuity with arithmetic difference. The nice feature of the user-friendly notation is that those teaching actuarial science students can use the SOA notation with our text with little or no difficulty.

To the Student

The style, presentation, and features of this text are presented with the student in mind. You should have a sense that you are sitting in our class as we make every effort to help you grasp the concepts. After we introduce and explain new concepts and principles, we try to have several relevant examples to reinforce and clarify those principles. Your goal in the study of the mathematics of finance and interest should be to gain a solid understanding of the few, but important, concepts presented in this text. When you understand what a formula does, it will be easy to remember. It will be a tool in your hand, not a burden on your back. In fact, there are not very many formulas, and what there are have been presented so they are not a mystery. Even within the theory sections every effort has been made to simplify and focus on the key elements. You will be using a financial calculator to perform all the tedious tasks like multiplying two ten-digit numbers, but punching buttons to get the correct answer is far less important than the underlying concepts. Plan to make extensive use of time lines to organize and visualize the exercises. A good time line often makes the needed steps and choice of a formula jump right out of the given information. You should carefully study the examples in the text and even work them out on your own. But if you merely use the examples as templates for working the exercises, you may find yourself deficient in the ability to reason out test questions that ire slightly different. Strive for understanding.

Some words of caution and direction are in order about exercise sets. The exercises are divided into three types: concept and short answer exercises; calculation exercises; and theory and extension. As a further student help, Appendix D contains a complete worked-out key for all of the concept and short answer exercises, for the odd-numbered calculation exercises, and for theory and extension exercises. Such a key is a valuable aid to learning, but it can also be the road to ruin if you believe that copying the key is doing the homework. Each section's homework remains incomplete until you understand and are comfortable with the concepts in that section.

Fabulous Author--its really 3.5 stars

First, anything by this author is great. My concern with him is he is divorced from a happy ending so I feel emotionally battered after reading his books. Its an experience and there has been growth but its isnt a feel good experience.

This was the last book of a trilogy. The first two books were devastastingly good. This was not as good as the first two. The beginning of this book expounds on the conclusion of the last book beautifully. Book 3 goes into detail on what happened to the characters at the end of book 2.

It wrapped up the the ending of the 2nd book of the trilogy which was extremely thrilling. After the beginning of book 3, the thrilling parts ended. Its not bad, just not as gripping or the pacing of the other novels. Still this is a great author, but of the trilogy, this is the weakest of the 3 books.

Definitely read the book just to find out what on the full extent of what happened after book 2.

Reading war, reading human.

I would never voluntarily read a book about war. And I freely admit my beliefs that violence and war are only the senseless tools of the senseless has been formed far too glibly, and far too distant from their reality. Through the eyes, the heart, the lives of all the characters in this novel and the whole trilogy my beliefs have been fortified and tears have been shed.
The hardcore realness of this narrative that takes place in World War One is so powerful that this reader felt the force of war; brought to that place by such compelling characters that a human connection was unavoidable. I do not think that I have ever had so much admiration for any such as these: with all their conflicts, strengths, weaknesses, heart, and amazing journeys.
Read the trilogy, you will never regret it.

"Had" to buy

This is the last book in a trilogy by Bryce Courtenay. I was introduced to the author by a friend who gave me the audio book for the second of the series "Tomo and Hawk". I was so taken by the story I searched for other books by Mr. Courtenay and ordered the frist in the series "The Patato Factory" and needed to find out "what happened" to the family. Great book, great story and so much historical accuracy that as a history lesson of the later 19th early 20th century you learn so much. Highly recommend the entire serires, although each book can "stand alone".

About the Author
Ivan Mistrik is a computer scientist who is interested in system and software engineering (SE/SWE) and in system and software architecture (SA/SWA), in particular: life cycle system/software engineering, requirements engineering, relating software requirements and architectures, knowledge management in software development, rationale-based software development, aligning enterprise/system/software architectures, and collaborative system/software engineering. He has more than forty years’ experience in the field of computer systems engineering as an information systems developer, R&D leader, SE/SA research analyst, educator in computer sciences, and ICT management consultant.

In the past 40 years, he has been primarily working at various R&D institutions and has done consulting on a variety of large international projects sponsored by ESA, EU, NASA, NATO, and UN. He has also taught university-level computer sciences courses in software engineering, software architecture, distributed information systems, and human-computer interaction. He is the author or co-author of more than 80 articles and papers in international journals, conferences, books and workshops, most recently a chapter Capture of Software Requirements and Rationale through Collaborative Software Development, a paper Knowledge Management in the Global Software Engineering Environment, and a paper Architectural Knowledge Management in Global Software Development.

He has written a number of editorials and prefaces, most recently for the book on Aligning Enterprise, System, and Software Architecture and the book on Agile Software Architecture. He has also written over 120 technical reports and presented over 70 scientific/technical talks. He has served in many program committees and panels of reputable international conferences and organized a number of scientific workshops, most recently two workshops on Knowledge Engineering in Global Software and Development at International Conference on Global Software Engineering 2009 and 2010 and IEEE International Workshop on the Future of Software Engineering for/in the Cloud (FoSEC) held in conjunction with IEEE Cloud 2011.He has been the guest-editor of IEE Proceedings Software: A special Issue on Relating Software Requirements and Architectures published by IEE in 2005 and the lead-editor of the book Rationale Management in Software Engineering published by Springer in 2006. He was the lead-editor of the Expert Systems Special Issue on Knowledge Engineering in Global Software Development and the co-editor of the JSS Special Issue on the Future of Software Engineering for/in the Cloud, both published in 2013. He was the co-editor for the book on Agile Software Architecture published in 2013. Currently, he is the lead-editor for the book on Economics-driven Software Architecture to be published in 2014.

Richard M Soley is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OMG ®. As Chairman and CEO of OMG, Dr. Soley is responsible for the vision and direction of the world's largest consortium of its type. Dr. Soley joined the nascent OMG as Technical Director in 1989, leading the development of OMG's world-leading standardization process and the original CORBA® specification. In 1996, he led the effort to move into vertical market standards (starting with healthcare, finance, telecommunications and manufacturing) and modeling, leading first to the Unified Modeling Language TM (UML®) and later the Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®).

Nour Ali is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton since December, 2012. She holds a PhD in Software Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia-Spain for her work in Ambients in Aspect-Oriented Software Architecture. Her research area encompasses service oriented architecture, software architecture, model driven engineering and mobile systems. In 2014, the University of Brighton have awarded her a Rising Stars project in Service Oriented Architecture Recovery and Consistency

John Grundy is Professor of Software Engineering, Dean of Software and Electrical Engineering and Director of the Centre for Computing and Engineering Software Systems at the Swinburne University of Technology. Previously he was Professor of Software Engineering and Head of Department for Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is Assistant Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, and Associate Editor for IEEE Software and Automated Software Engineering. He is on the Steering Committee of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Automated Software Engineering.

Bedir Tekinerdogan is a full professor and chair of the Information Technology group at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. He received his MSc degree (1994) and a PhD degree (2000) in Computer Science, both from the University of Twente, The Netherlands. From 2003 until 2008 he was a faculty member at University of Twente, after which he joined Bilkent University until 2015. He has more than 20 years of experience in software engineering research and education. His main research includes the engineering of smart software-intensive systems. In particular, he has focused on and is interested in software architecture design, software product line engineering, model-driven development, parallel computing, cloud computing and system of systems engineering. He has been active in dozens of national and international research and consultancy projects with various large software companies whereby he has worked as a principal researcher and leading software/system architect. He has reviewed more than 100 national and international software research and development projects and is a regular reviewer for around 20 international journals. He graduated around 40 MSc students and supervised more than 10 PhD students. He has developed and taught more than 15 different academic software engineering courses and has provided software engineering courses to more than 50 companies in The Netherlands, Germany and Turkey.
