Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History, by Rhonda Garelick

Little black dresses. Fake pearls. Jersey knit. Blazers. Ballet flats. Today - and for nearly the last hundred years - we all see some version of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel every time we pass a woman on the street. But few among us realize that Chanel's role in the events of the 20th century was as pervasive as her influence on fashion, or how deeply she absorbed and then brilliantly reimagined the historical currents around her. Here, with unprecedented detail and ambition - and through fascinating, thoroughly researched portraits of Chanel's lovers and friends - Rhonda Garelick shows us the Chanel who conquered the world: a woman who thirsted to create others in her image, who ruthlessly and innovatively borrowed from her famous (and infamous) intimates, who understood the idea of branding and image well ahead of her time, who created "wearable personality". This is Chanel at the nexus of history: a woman of daring, passion, and legendary vision, in a wonderful biography that gives her long-awaited due.

Biased Biography with Ulterior Motives
By Domo
Though extensive and seemingly exhaustive in its details and depth of research, almost half of the 600 pages is devoted to hammering it into our heads the fact that Coco Chanel was a fascist Nazi sympathizer. Garelick attempts to subtly separate Coco Chanel the fascist woman from Chanel the powerhouse fashion brand of today, so as not to offend the current owners nor damage their profits in any way.
The author easily glosses over the fact that Coco had to gain the favor of the Nazis in order to rescue her nephew (or most likely son), who was dying in Nazi captivity and whom she loved dearly. The author quickly glosses over the fact that the Wertheimers royally screwed Coco by setting up their own, separate Chanel corporation in America during the war, and profited enormously from perfume sales, all the while sharing none of it with the woman herself.
The first thing Garelick does is insinuate that the interlocking C logo is a fascist symbol much like the swastika, and how Coco's own fascist tendencies enabled her fashion brand to dominate. There are a good twenty pages or so where the author lectures the reader on fascism and the evils of the German Nazis. It is repetitive, completely unnecessary, and only serves Garelick's purpose in imprinting a very negative image of Coco in the readers' minds. Many of those who were wealthy or had much to lose during the war were Nazi sympathizers, including the British royal family and almost everyone in the upper echelons of European society, but the particularly harsh focus of the author on Coco, as well as Garelick's own personal insinuations (which she weaves in many paragraphs stealthily) on Coco’s thoughts or motives, are just plain annoying.
The real motive of this biography is to shame, denigrate, and disparage Coco Chanel the woman, while simultaneously praising and building respect for the house of Chanel under the Wertheimer ownership. I do not recommend this book, and feel that it portrays a very strong woman who overcame incredible tragedies and obstacles in a purposefully negative light. It is not an unbiased, objective biography.

Unexpectedly, a page-turner!
By JB Nolet
I thought I knew this story; as they say, 'I saw the movie...' But I didn't know the half of it. Reading on, I found myself staying up later and later, dying to know what Coco would do next. I was particularly struck by Garelick's meticulous research -- her apt contextualizing of historical events and convincing use of new information about Gabrielle Chanel's friends, to show how they affected the haute-couture designer's constantly-evolving, increasingly mercurial persona. The last third of the book makes for disturbing reading. We watch Chanel as her dynamic charisma becomes manic grandiosity and she slips into sadistic madness without, apparently, losing her innate creative genius. She may not have been lovable (though many loved her) but Coco Chanel is an utterly unforgettable character -- the perfect heroine for a vampire movie. Without revealing any of the book's dramatic surprises, let me particularly recommend the passage where she spends several hours alone with the corpse of her ambivalently-loved friend Misia Natanson-Edwards-Sert. One thought -- I read the book on my paper-white Kindle, which cannot do justice to its many illustrations. The images are important to understanding the character, who in her own way was a visual artist. If you can, buy the physical book.

Tediously Thorough
By Sharon
Extremely well researched and minutely detailed in seemingly every aspect of Chanel's life. I began to find it tedious by only one-third finished, even though I have read many lengthier biographies. My loss of interest is not as much the fault of the author's as my previous ignorance of Chanel's extreme Nazi leanings that completely disenchanted me from learning more about her and will forever keep me from purchasing or using her empire's products.

Sister of My Heart: A Novel, by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

From the award-winning author of Mistress of Spices, the bestselling novel about the extraordinary bond between two women, and the family secrets and romantic jealousies that threaten to tear them apart.

Anju is the daughter of an upper-caste Calcutta family of distinction. Her cousin Sudha is the daughter of the black sheep of that same family. Sudha is startlingly beautiful; Anju is not. Despite those differences, since the day on which the two girls were born, the same day their fathers died--mysteriously and violently--Sudha and Anju have been sisters of the heart. Bonded in ways even their mothers cannot comprehend, the two girls grow into womanhood as if their fates as well as their hearts were merged.

But, when Sudha learns a dark family secret, that connection is shattered. For the first time in their lives, the girls know what it is to feel suspicion and distrust. Urged into arranged marriages, Sudha and Anju's lives take opposite turns. Sudha becomes the dutiful daughter-in-law of a rigid small-town household. Anju goes to America with her new husband and learns to live her own life of secrets. When tragedy strikes each of them, however, they discover that despite distance and marriage, they have only each other to turn to.

Set in the two worlds of San Francisco and India, this exceptionally moving novel tells a story at once familiar and exotic, seducing readers from the first page with the lush prose we have come to expect from Divakaruni. Sister of My Heart is a novel destined to become as widely beloved as it is acclaimed.

Amazon.com Review
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni made an indelible impression on the literary world with her first novel, The Mistress of Spices, a magical tale of love and herbs. Sister of My Heart is less reliant on enchantment but no less enchanting as it tells the tale of two cousins born on the same day, their premature births brought on by a mysterious occurrence that claims the lives of both their fathers. Sudha is beautiful, Anju is not; yet the girls love each other as sisters, the bond between them so strong it seems nothing can break it. When both are pushed into arranged marriages, however, each discovers a devastating secret that changes their relationship forever.

Sister of My Heart spans many years and zigzags between India and America as the cousins first grow apart and then eventually reunite. Divakaruni invests this domestic drama with poetry as she traces her heroines' lives from infancy to motherhood, but it is Sudha and Anju who give the story its backbone. Anju might speak for both when she says, "In spite of all my insecurities, in spite of the oceans that'll be between us soon and the men that are between us already, I can never stop loving Sudha. It's my habit, and it's my fate." Book lovers may well discover that reading Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is habit-forming as well. --Margaret Prior

From Publishers Weekly
Like the old tales of India that are filled with emotional filigree and flowery prose, Divakaruni's (The Mistress of Spices) latest work is a masterful allegory of unfulfilled desire and sacrificial love. It is also an intricate modern drama in which generations and castes struggle over old and new mores. Anju and Sudha are cousins, born in the same household in Calcutta on the same day?which is also the day on which their mothers learn that both their husbands have been killed in a reckless quest for a cave full of rubies. Sudha grows up believing her father was a no-good schemer who brought ruin on his cousin, Anju's upper-class father. As they mature, Anju dreams of college, Sudha of children, but arranged marriages divide and thwart them. Anju adjusts to life in California with a man who lusts after Sudha; Sudha grapples with a mother-in-law who turns to the goddess Shasti to fill Sudha's barren womb rather than to a doctor for her sterile son. Ultimately, the tie between Anju and Sudha supersedes all other love, as each sustains painful loss to save the other. When Sudha learns the truth about her father and no longer needs to right his wrongs, she sees that all along her affection for Anju has not been dictated by necessity. An inspired and imaginative raconteur, Divakaruni is sure to engender comparisons with Arundhati Roy (The God of Small Things), but Divakaruni's novel stands in its own right as a compelling read. If her prose sometimes veers toward the purple, her mesmerizing narrative sustains it well. Agent, Sandra Dijkstra; author tour.

From Library Journal
Like Rebecca Wells's Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood (LJ 5/1/96), Divakaruni's debut novel, The Mistress of Spices (LJ 2/1/97), was a word-of-mouth hit; its blend of magical realism and culinary sensuality also appealed to fans of Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate (LJ 9/1/92). This second novel is a bit more earth-bound. Born on the same day their fathers die in a mysterious accident, Sudha and Anju are more than just cousins; although Anju is the daughter of an upper-caste Calcutta family and Sudha the daughter of a black-sheep renegade, they are sisters of the heart, bound by a deep love. Narrated by Sudha and Anju in alternate chapters, this is the tale of their relationship over the years, a friendship that is almost destroyed by jealousy and family secrets. Although much of the plot is contrived (the final revelation is no big surprise) and the male characters are stock cliches, this is still an engaging read, filled with tender, moving moments. For popular fiction collections.

Not a balanced insight - for the most part, just shows the negative side of Indian men, culture and women's issues.
By Fari
Overall, a good one-time read mostly because the descriptions are very vivid. Having grown up in South Asia and now living away, it made me very nostalgic. (My mother is from Calcutta and the places mentioned were very familiar as well). There are some twists and turns that kept me going but nothing that made me want to read it again.

While the problems and situations portrayed do happen (although far less in recent times), there is a severe lack of showing the good side of Indian culture, marriage and men. All men are not controlling, in-laws are not always so oppressive and marriages aren't always arranged nor so bad. Most importantly, a big part of Indian culture is the close-knit and supportive family and friends - which is totally lacking in the story. All the tea-time aunties are portrayed as malicious gossipers. Where is Gouri's family or Pishi's other relatives? The author makes it seem that once a woman is married, her family disconnects from her and all other women (apart from the Chatterjee household) want to do is gossip and hurt each other. Way too much exaggeration and very lopsided portrayal. For those not familiar with the culture, this would paint a very incomplete and inaccurate picture.

However, nothing can beat the ruby mine adventure in the jungles... so far fetched and silly that I almost put the book away at that point (and continued to read only because of the high ratings). A better reason for the men's disappearance would have made it more realistic. The plot is also very weak. By the end, when everything comes together, the story has a soap opera feel to it.

Sister of My Heart - Is this different than sister of my family?
By Erin
The author is a gifted writer. Her understanding of her subject is intricate and amazing. The story of the two sisters provides an expanded view of the definition of the term sister. The descriptive writing of the places and people allowed me to envision an almost movie-like sense of the story and made me truly care about the people and their possible outcomes.

Polished Prose, Soap-Opera Story
By Neil Chilson
The author evokes some vivid imagery, and the book moves along smoothly enough. But the plot is straight out of the sappiest soap opera or Bollywood film, and the feminist message is crudely formulated. Every man in the book is a liar, a fool, or a coward - and most are all three. The two main women make every serious life decision as if they were 13 year old girls in the throes of their own hormone-driven emotions. My sympathy for their often horrible situations wears somewhat thin by the end of the book.

Having said that, the author can turn a phrase, and she shines when writing the fairy tales that the main characters tell each other.

Excellent book for bladder biopsy. Comprehensive, very updated and precise reference book. The only unsatisfactory part is that the new chapter of urine cytology is not very good probably due to the limitation of contents. However, I still strongly recommend this book.

Olympian Confessions: Hades and Persephone, by Erin Kinsella

Persephone is a Goddess without a title even though her relatives include the Lord of Light, Goddess of Wisdom, and the Queen of the Gods.

She's only known as the daughter of her mother, something that leaves her feeling frustrated. She longs to escape Mount Olympus to discover who she truly is.

Hades is the God of the Underworld, and when family obligations force him to attend a festival, he sees Persephone and knows what he's looking at: a vibrant young Goddess aching to break free.

So begins an unlikely and tentative friendship that allows Persephone to cultivate her curiosity and blossom as a Goddess in her own right. The two escape to the Underworld together, infuriating Persephone's mother, the Goddess Demeter.

Crops die and mortals begin to starve as a consequence of Demeter's wrath, and Persephone has two choices: Take charge of her own life or abandon the person she has become by returning to Olympus.

Passions swirl, violence erupts, and the fate of the world is at stake as Gods and Goddesses let loose in Olympian Confessions.

Definitely worth the read
By Lucidity
I have always loved basically any kind of books that have a Greek mythological influence, and so over the years I must have read dozens by now – but I’d have to say that Erin Kinsella’s “Olympian Confessions” would certainly be in my top 3, and that’s saying a lot considering I, admittedly, can be quite critical toward the genre sometimes. I am always afraid of giving away spoilers in reviews, but I will end this saying that the book is a must-read for anyone looking for an Olympian tale that is expressed through a vivid, visually-rich writing style that compliments the complex structure of the plot perfect.

Fun and Insightful Spin on Greek Mythology
By deep.blue.sea
As interesting as Greek Mythology can be with all of its various and detailed characters and the roles they played, there is something that the historical context lacks, and that’s personality.

Olympian Confessions brims over with the charisma and temperaments that you would expect from the gods who mythically walked the earth while we were but an audience to their glorious and thundering interactions. This book let’s you feel like a part of the mythology as an emotional and detailed tale unfolds that immerses you in colossal settings from Mt. Olympus to Hades.

A compelling new take on Hades and Persephone love story!
By Ms. Bookaholic
This is a like a breath of fresh air! A love how the author develop a plot of Greek mythology in an entirely different level. It’s nice to see Hades as a protagonist instead of the usual “bad” God among his fellow Olympians. The character building is remarkable. Each character including minor ones were given the right introduction, that even if you don’t know much about Greek mythology, you’ll still be able to understand the story. This is not just a love story; it has heart-pumping action and unexpected twists that will surely keep you glued to your seats. Highly recommended!
