He discusses the differences between icon and canon, a theme threaded through many of the essays. In addition to unexpected analyses of buildings such as Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Paul Rudolph’s Art and Architecture Building at Yale University, and the work of Antoni Gaudí and Frank Gehry, the collection includes a clear-eyed look at the role of architecture in addressing social problems.

 

Ultimately, these essays assert that judging architecture requires more than a refined sensibility. Buildings also need to be evaluated by their impact on the people living within and around them.

Raises Excellent Questions

This is a great collection of essays, mostly from the late 1990's, that raise a number of serious questions for architects and critics. Some of the contributors deal with questions of value in abstract terms while others focus on specific projects to draw out issues. Saunders own essay is a good review of contemporary architectural criticism. I highly recommend this to students or practicing professionals struggling with questions about what makes architecture "good."

Saunders (Assistant Dean, Harvard University's Graduate School of Design), Judging Architectural Value is an anthology of essays by experienced authors seeking to answer the questions: what do people value in architecture, how do changing values affect opinions about architecture? From "Why Are Some Buildings More Interesting Than Others?" to "Learning from St. Louis: The Arch, the Canon, and Bourdieu" to "Eyesore or Art? On Tyree Guyton's Heidelberg Project", the essays offer a scholarly, measured debate, and ultimately indicate that making judgments about architecture involves much more than aesthetic sensibility. Especially recommended as a "big picture" supplement for professionals and aspiring architects.

Over the past ten years, electromagnetic metamaterials have become ubiquitous in modern photonics research, following Pendry's proposal of a perfect flat lens via negative refraction at the turn of the millennium, and the related development of invisibility cloaks. These two paradigms have their counterparts in another emerging subject of wave motion: Acoustic metamaterials, which are locally resonant structures displaying an effective macroscopic behaviour (such as a negative density) beyond Newton's second law. Applications of acoustic metamaterials range from non-invasive probing and high-resolution tomography in medical imaging, to acoustic camouflaging and seismic protection.

The twelve chapters constituting this book present an up-to-date survey of many aspects of acoustic metamaterials, including filtering effects, extraordinary transmission, subwavelength imaging via tomography or time-reversal techniques, cloaking via transformation acoustics and elastodynamics and even cloaking via acoustic scattering cancellation and active exterior cloaking.  It is hoped that the variety of subjects touched upon in this book, and the ways in which they can be treated theoretically, numerically and experimentally give a grasp of the richness of the emerging topic of acoustic metamaterials and will contribute to initiate even more research activity and applications in the near future.

About the Author
Fabián A. Samaniego earned his B.A. degree at New Mexico State University and completed his graduate work at the University of Iowa. He taught four years at Utah State University before going to the University of California at Davis, where he served as coordinator of the first-year Spanish program and supervisor of teaching assistants for 24 years. He also served as assistant director of several Foreign Language Competency projects for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Unified School Districts, and for the Santa Clara and Sacramento County Offices of Education. In addition, he served on the steering committee of the California Foreign Language Teacher Preparation Project and on the California Foreign Language Project Policy Board. He is frequently asked to conduct in-service workshops for schools and universities across the country. Samaniego's first-year college text, DÍMELO TÚ!, is in its sixth edition, and his intermediate text, MUNDO 21, recently published in its fourth edition. He is a co-author of LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN LEARNING: TEACHING SPANISH TO NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH and of DIME!, a seven-book school series that includes a two-year native Spanish speaker's program: Tu mundo and Nuestro mundo.

Francisco Rodriguez Nogales is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the School of Modern Languages at Santa Barbara City College. He is a specialist in the use of technology in foreign-language teaching and online instruction--his teaching load has been 100 percent online for the past five years. He also has developed several Spanish assessment and placement tools. Nogales was born in Pedrera (Seville), Spain. He completed his bachelor of arts at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, his master's at San Francisco State University, and his Ph.D. at the University of California at Davis.

This book is mostly useful, but sometimes it is very frustrating when you are doing the exercises because some of them ask you questions about a text and the text cannot answer it. The questions are answerable for the most part, but those few that aren't make homework more annoying than it has to be. It also does not include answers to the practice questions in the grammar sections.

About the Author
Jeffrey M. Wooldridge is a University Distinguished Professor of Economics at Michigan State University, where he has taught since 1991. From 1986 to 1991, he served as Assistant Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Wooldridge has published more than three dozen articles in internationally recognized journals, as well as several chapters in well-respected books. He is also the author of ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF CROSS SECTION AND PANEL DATA. His work has earned numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the Plura Scripsit award from Econometric Theory, the Sir Richard Stone prize from the Journal of Applied Econometrics, and three graduate teacher-of-the-year awards from MIT. A fellow of the Econometric Society and of the Journal of Econometrics, Dr. Wooldridge has been editor of the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and econometrics co-editor of Economics Letters. He has also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Econometrics and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Dr. Wooldridge received his B.A. with majors in computer science and economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, San Diego.

I teach a first course in regression analysis to graduate students from a variety of disciplines. With rare exceptions, they take this course under duress, and their background in basic statistics is usually weak. This means that I use a lot of relatively simple examples, gradually becoming more complex as we move through the material. Functional redundancy -- saying the same thing in a variety of ways -- is also indispensable. Furthermore, I spend very little time on derivations, and try to begin doing simple problems with SPSS software by the second or third meeting.

Given this approach to fairly complex material, it is difficult to find a suitable textbook. For several years I used Gujarati's basic econometrics text and found it useful. Gujarati, however, takes a very long time to get to multiple regression, first covering the assumptions which apply to all applications of OLS regression and offering only simple regression equations for illustrative purposes.

A primary virtue of Wooldridge's basic text is that he introduces substantively interesting problems -- those using more than one independent variable -- early on. The OLS assumptions and remedies for their violation are still given excellent coverage, but this is integrated effectively throughout the book.

Wooldridge's text is a bit more difficult than Gujarati's, but it's not densely mathematical, focusing instead on practical problems. With a little guidance students acquire a very thorough grounding in regression analysis with Wooldridge's basic text. It covers a sufficiently broad range of topics, moreover, that I have found it valuable for self-instructional purposes. (If only it weren't so expensive!)

Given the foregoing, I think it is worth noting that Wooldridge's more advanced text, Econometric Analysis of Cross-Section and Panel Data, is not written in the same spirit as his introductory text. Most readers who do not use econometrics every day will, I think, find it quite difficult, presupposing a good deal of mathematical preparation, including practiced facility in using matrix algebra.

Great for Self Study

I bought this text so that I could understand/interpret results and methodology in empirical business research papers. Unlike most statistic-related books I've seen over the years, this text is actually clear and focuses on providing great explanations and examples rather than proofs and derivations. Thus, this book is a great choice for self study, and it's been a huge help thus far in my PhD program.

a great introduction into econometrics

Wooldridge has managed to write a great and intuitive introduction into econometrics. The book doesn't require any prerequisites despite basic high school math and statistics. Matrix algebra is only used in some of the appendices, which is a bit sad, as the introduction of it in the text, and the usage during the text, would have been a major advantage when reading more advanced books on econometrics. Despite that, the book is really fascinating. Written in a simple yet rather rigorous style, accessible and self-explanatory. The examples aren't always economic, which is a small lack, but in a way Wooldridge does what he is promising to do: He introduces the reader into the methods of modern econometrics, from a very solid and thorough coverage of OLS to more advanced methods such as panel data analysis, time series (basics, unit roots, co-integration) or ILS and 2SLS (simultaneous equation models). In my opinion, the book can be used for two one-semester courses. The availability of data sets for the computer exercises is useful for both students as well as instructors. Apart from its lack of matrix algebra, this book presents a consistent, solid, but easily understandable introduction into econometric methods so that even survey articles from e.g. the Handbook of International Economics using econometrics are rather easily readable. Kennedy's 'A Guide to Econometrics' makes a good companion, for further studies, Greene's econometric bible ('Econometric Analysis') is probably the most recommendable book.

EXCELLENT GRAMMAR SERIES!

As a Spanish teacher for 14 years, I LOVE this series of books. They are better, in most cases, than any of the official text books we have to use. I tell my students to buy them as a support for learning all aspects of Spanish grammar and they love them. The biggest reason for their popularity is the no frills, clear, concise explanations given for every item they are teaching. They also have good practice pages and easy to find answers in the back to correct one's work. The cost is much better than what students pay for overpriced text books! I often wanted to get my school to replace the text books with all of the books in this series. They are still less expensive than one text book of lesser quality!

Another excellent book for learning Spanish

This is the second Spanish text by Dorothy Richmond that I am using to learn Spanish. This one goes through vocabulary in a very well organized fashion. It first starts with spelling and pronounciation rules,then moving on to vocabulary organized into handy groups. The learning curve is not too steep. I felt that it is really helping me to increase my daily vocabulary. If the student knows a little Spanish first, it would helpful.

Really misleading Spanish Vocabulary book

I am a native Spanish speaker. I am seriously concerned with the fact that there are people out there who think this is an useful book. There are BIG mistakes throughout the whole book. Not only of spelling but of grammar. For ex: camelo for camello, ex-esposo for exmarido (that word does not even exist. It is not included in the DRAE (Dicitionary of the Royal Spanish Academy) and should it exist the prefix should be attached to the base, not separated by a dash), el coliflor (masc.) instead of the correct LA coliflor (fem). Do not buy this book if you want to learn PROPER EDUCATED STANDARD vocabulary. It has hundreds of mistakes.

Note: Just for those of you who doesn't know about it, the RAE (Real Academia de la Lengua Española) is the academic institution that since 1713 determines the correct grammar rules and usage of the Spanish Language. It is composed by academic members from Spain, Latin America and The Philippines, and foreign personalities who have an outstanding distinction in the Spanish language and literature.

Norman and Emily Rosenberg are DeWitt Wallace Professors of History at Macalester College and have researched and published widely in twentieth century American history.

In Our Times, like the period of U.S. history it seeks to represent, remains a work in progress. We began writing the first edition of this book in the mid1970s, when only thirty years had elapsed since 1945. In this seventh, 2002 edition, the book now wears twice as many years as when we began—and so do we. We continue to be gratified that this book—one of the first texts designed for "1945 to present" courses—remains a favorite among history teachers and students. We have again undertaken the kind of reorganization and updating that those who use In Our Times, and we ourselves, expect.

We strive to provide students and instructors with an interesting, readable, and coherent historical framework. We have streamlined the narrative, integrated new scholarship, and entirely reorganized most chapters. New, and more numerous, pictures, charts, and maps enhance the book's visual dimension. Updated bibliographies, along with suggested websites, provide additional resources for teaching and learning. Users will find that our new introductions to chapters and to sections bring major themes into focus while enhancing the text's narrative quality.

In this seventh journey through "our times," we have incurred many debts of gratitude. Our greatest goes to the anonymous reviewers, some of whom suggested the reorganizations and additions that we have undertaken for this new edition. We trust that they will see many of their fine recommendations reflected in these pages: more discussion, for example, of the soldier's experience in Vietnam and of cultural diplomacy; greater consistency in chapter size; improved organization ire the coverage of politics, diplomacy, and culture; significant expansion of material on the 1980s and 1990s. We have, of course, revised and updated our strong treatment of mass culture, a feature that has appealed to students over the years.

We also extend our special thanks to our editors. Charles Cavaliere enthusiastically imparted a new vision and a special commitment to In Our Times. Emsal Hasan has skillfully carried this book forward through the last two editions; his enthusiasm, good sense, and attention to detail has made him a true collaborator. In Our Times, like our teaching career at Macalester College, remains a joint production. Although we continue to split the primary responsibility for .reviewing and rewriting specific sections, the computer remains community property. One of us will often complete the paragraph or sentence that the other had begun or had once thought, mistakenly, to be complete. For any errors of fact or judgment, each of us can offer the ready excuse that it was surely committed by "the other Professor Rosenberg." Yet we will also be happy to take joint credit for whatever positive features this book offers.

Interesting Economic Read

This book was relatively dry and factual, but it gets the point through. It is something that people should read to learn more about the complex economic situation this nation is undergoing.

Bought for class, so, not exactly something I wanted to read. It is very informative and the authors are able to cover a lot of material in a relatively short book.

Purchased "Social Work Administration"

The best thing about this transaction was the price. It was very inexpensive and it was the book I wanted. The only criticism I have is the description said "like new" but the book arrived with the dust jacket missing and some pages had been annotated or highlighted by the previous owner. This is not a major complaint given the price, but I do not agree this is "like new" condition. I would have given the transaction a higher rating if the item description had been more accurate so that I was not expecting something "like new".
