Even Better than the First!

I've been dying to get my hands on this and couldn't remember what the advance order delivery date was but it is today! I have just thumbed through it a bit, but even from what I've seen the book is as good or even better than the first. Scott has lately been dabbling in closer shots (as Robert Capa said, "if your pictures aren't good enough you're not close enough" -- or something like that.)

Scott has an uncanny eye and his aesthetic is just amazing. He covers a broad range of subjects here and, while some of the styles may not be for everybody, everybody in this book belongs there. Bravo, Scott!

His blog has better pictures then what was published. I like street style but unfortunately most of the pictures taken was of people who went to the fashion shows. His blog has better pictures of people who can really mix the lows and highs...and they are not people in the fashion industry coming on going to a fashion show.

Is a must have in my collection and 1 of my most treasured possessions, it's an easy go to for inspiration on days that my brain is overloaded with style indulgence. And if you have ever met Scott Schuman or watched his videos or hear him speak about his passion, you would know that this is his true calling. He is as close to a gatekeeper of the right to express yourself through fashion and personal style that we have had come along since Bill Cunningham and Grace Coddington. Recommended to Those Wanting to Apply Lean Techniques

An industrial contractor once told me that he really liked the fact that companies were trying to apply Lean because he got a lot of work as a fallout of poor application.

It's amazing to me that companies will try to adopt state-of-the-art manufacturing concepts, such as Lean, without a good understanding of what they hope to accomplish or even why the concepts have become popular.

I think part of the reason is that there is not much useful, practical advice on how to do it.

This book goes a long way toward filling that void.

It is loaded with practical examples and exercises to clarify the application methods and benefits. It has some suggestions on getting started that can make you money almost immediately.

Chapters 2-5 provide a good overview (and there is a glossary for quick reference). Chapters 6-8 give a step-by-step procedure for getting started. Other chapters explain how to advance a process already in place and several chapters have excellent case examples. I especially liked chapter 18 where there is a simple experiment with dice to show the effect of variation on plant capacity.

I very much enjoyed reading this book because it helped me understand the principles and how to apply them. I was also impressed with how much the case studies reinforced the principles and tied them to real events. I recommend it to those who wish to implement lean in their facility.

Outstanding Practical Guide to Lean Manufacturing!

If you have read "LEAN THINKING" by James P Womack and Daniel T. Jones, you may have been left wondering what Lean Manufacturing and the Toyota Production System was all about. It may have seemed mysterious and not well defined. Lonnie Wilson's "HOW TO IMPLEMENT LEAN MANUFACTURING" is a guidebook to Lean Manufacturing that will take the mystery out of process for you. It is a practical HOW-TO guide that can be used by plant managers, executives, quality managers and production personnel to implement the Lean Systems within their facilities.

This book not only addresses the strategy on how to implement Lean Manufacturing but also addresses cultural change necessary for a successful transformation. In the end you have to sustain the gain and the book tells you what is necessary.

What makes this book standout from other Lean texts is that the book itself is written in a Lean style of writing. Lonnie uses "Points of Clarity" to highlight important concepts within the book. Additionally he uses hundreds of visual graphics and tables that draw the reader's attention. Visual clues and organization is a key concept in Lean. I don't think you can turn two or more pages without being grabbed by a new visual to help make a point in the book.

I was impressed with the level of practical detail. Need to calculate OEE or the proper KANBAN size? Does Value Stream Mapping have you confused? The book provides the formula's necessary. It places these concepts in context to the big picture of efficiency, lead-time or cycle-time reduction. The book is filled with personal examples from Lonnie Wilson's career leading transformation efforts. Case studies are also given to drive home and follow the complete process of a successful Lean project and some that are not so successful.

This is a book I would personally recommend to anyone getting ready to attend a Lean training workshop. Read this book first and you will be prepared for your class. As a university instructor, I like to tell my students, "The answer is in the book". I think you will find many insightful answers about Lean in Lonnie Wilson's "HOW TO IMPLEMENT LEAN MANUFACTURING".

A practical approach to implementing lean manufacturing

Lonnie Wilson teaches you how to implement the best aspects of lean manufacturing without having to implement the cultural aspects of the Toyota Production System. He believes that cultural transformation, while a benefit if you can pull it off, keeps you from realizing he benefits of Lean quickly, is risky, and adds cost to your Lean project.

Chapter 1 explains his views along these lines and Chapter 2 is a look at Toyota's System and why you need a manufacturing system that focuses on behavior more than culture. Chapter 3 shows you why variation gets in the way of your manufacturing goals and how inventory masks and is the result of variation. You want to eliminate inventory and you have to eliminate variation in order to eliminate the need for inventory. Chapter 5 shows you why Lead Time exists and how you can reduce it.

Chapter 6 discuses the basics of Cultural Change and how need to start thinking about Lean and your manufacturing culture. Chapter 7 looks at strategic approaches you can take to becoming a Lean Manufacturing environment and shows you what Takt is and how to use it. You also get a look at what a basic time study is and how to conduct a balancing study. Spaghetti Diagrams and Value Stream Mapping are also discussed.

Chapter 8 takes you through a Lean implementation process while chapter 9 looks at how to do Lean planning and how to set appropriate and achievable goals. Chapter 10 shows you how to maintain the gains you worked so hard to make and chapter 11 looks at the effect of your culture on Lean and how to think about what you can do with your own.

Chapters 12 and 13 deal with managing your constraints and the benefits you can realize by using cellular manufacturing. Chapter 14 is a case study on cultural change and chapter 15 is a case study on early gains realized by reducing lead times. Chapter 16 is three small case studies as good examples of what to do. Chapter 17 looks at what happens when Lean is used poorly. The last three chapters show you how to conduct your own experiments on variation and inventory, a bunch of assessment tools you can use, and a summary of how your company can become a house of Lean.

This is, I believe, a useful and practical book. Heaven knows, we need to become even more competitive to hold onto as many manufacturing jobs as we can. Maybe someday we can once again grow our manufacturing base. But if we ever do, it will be because we have become globally competitive not because of some series of spending initiatives out of Washington D.C..

A work of genius, ignored for far too long

This book was nominated for a Pulitzer in 1973 by its publisher and was to be the basis of an entire issue of The Saturday Review, when it was bought out and the plan to do this was dropped. It's a pity and a loss. I've known George Land since 1977. He is a wide-ranging intellect, a great spirit, and a keen observer of the human scene. In this book, at a time when he was a top-tier C-level consultant--often being paid $10,000 a day, and worth it--George authored one of those books that can change forever how you see what is happening around you. In this book, he creates a "unified field theory" of life forms, from amoebas to IBM--from organisms to organizations--integrating information from many of the sciences to draw a map of how Nature grows itself through an ongoing process of pattern formation, self-imitation to a point of success, then renews itself through a process of de- and re-construction of its constituent elements to create a self-transformation that then repeats this cycle of transformational growth across the Natural world. George's ability to integrate so much information and unify it within a single map of the change process in Nature is remarkable. Even more remarkable are its many applications in terms of human activity: the human Nature that Nature has implanted in us. Knowledge is power, they say. There's a lot of power and perspective in these pages. The leaders of economic decision bodies, political parties, and leaders of all stripes would do well to consult its wisdom.

Disclaimer: I've known George Land since I met him at a conference on education of the gifted. He gave the keynote, in which he referred to giftedness as a "special case of retardation." He was speaking of giftedness, mind you, not genius. The way Bobby Fisher was gifted at chess--and a blind and stupid boor in almost every other aspect of his life. George's ability to see the obverse of the obvious is one of his hallmarks. This book is not "an easy read," packed as it is with scientific facts, theories, and cross-comparisons; yet it is thrilling to encounter, much as Joseph Campbell's work is thrilling. You recognize that you are in the presence of something that feels like the underlying truth beneath the shreds of knowledge we think we know and understand. It ties together a lot of human behavior, both individual and organizational. The implications of "third-phase change" this book provides are a roadmap through the paradigm shift that is occurring today in almost every major field of human endeavor. George Land's perspective is even more relevant now than when he first shared it with the world nearly 40 years ago, as paradigms crumble and leaders scurry back to the last paradigm, hoping to huddle safely under its umbrella. Nature is just but unmerciful. Either we grow and transform, or we pay more for refusing Nature's intrinsic pattern. This book, more than most, provides a secure map to the shifting forms of Nature and the crises and processes wrought by human Nature.

In this immensely creative synthesis, George T. Lock Land presents a set of laws through which mankind can not only control its destiny but also extend its freedom. Grow or Die - that is Nature's single mandate - and that is the basis of this new theory of human behavior and evolution. "Transformation Theory" is a re-definition of the process of growth to which every life and pre-life form is subject. Impelled by the most basic and universal drive - the drive to grow - all biological, physical, chemical, psychological and cultural processes are intrinsically equivalent. Cell biology, says Mr. Land, is the template for man's psychological drives, and the key to understanding individual and social behavior is to be found in the behavior of atoms, molecules, and cells. Creativity, mental illness, urban decay, self-sacrifice, colonialism, revolution, sadism, beauty, and human love all thus obey Nature's command to grow or perish.

Russia's Islamic ThreatThis is published by Yale University press so the language is more academic and conscience making this a challenging book to read through, but if your looking for a detailed book on Islamic Terrorism in Russia then this is the book for you.

In Russia's Islamic Threat, Gordon M. Hahn talks about the spreading jihadist movement throughout many of the Muslim republics within Russia, beyond Chechnya and potential reasons why jihad is such an appealing idea to some Muslim populations within Russia like mass unemployment, and a state tendency to favor the Slavic majority within Russia. He also discusses how Vladimir Putin's recentralization of power away from the individial regions and into the hands of the state could and in many republics has given rise to radical Islamic cells within these republics that have carried out terrorist attacks in places such as Ingushetia, Dagestan, and the KBR.

Hahn closes with a discussion of policy steps that can be taken by both US and Russian forces to combat Islamic terrorism and decrease the likelihood of another Beslan or even worse a terrorist getting his hands on Nuclear material and creating a weapon that can be used to inflict mass casualties.

A selective, sneering disappointment

This is a prime exhibit of an agenda-focused, politicized book that gives a little knowledge mixed with a lot of propaganda. "Russia's Islamic threat", a very paranoid title itself, gives some insight as to the author's thought process. Happily Hahn is not exactly opposed to Islam within or around Russia--more to public manifestations. Much as neoconservatives and liberal hawks did after 9/11 for the United States, Hahn ties any and every even mild Islamist movement with the poorly conceptualized "global jihad"--by which, apparently, he means Islamists with global networks, a far less daunting prospect in a globalized world than it sounds.

Using the United States' traditional hostility towards Russia as a fig leaf to explain that Russia has been misunderstood--itself not exactly a flawed premise, but one that he exploits to the full--Hahn goes on to term any armed Islamist group within Russia as unambiguously, evil, barbaric terrorists. Not once does he mention that even the most heinous crimes of the most hardened Islamist rebels in places like Chechnya--such as the horrific Beslan school crisis--were, however horrible, a fraction of the scorched-earth, collective punishment campaign launched by the Russian state that entirely flattened Chechnya and killed anywhere from a million to two million Chechens. That is not a justification of the brutal terrorism that was waged at such venues as Beslan school by Chechen rebels, but it is entirely ignored and thereby the conflict given a one-sided, distorted history that paints Chechens as barbaric savages (with an occasional "good" Chechen, like the brutal pro-Russian puppet thug Ramzan Kadyrov) and the Russian army as a poor, misunderstood entity unfairly vilified by external observers intrinsically anti-Russia. It is true that there is an anti-Russian bias in the media, but it pales before the anti-Islam bias & in fact the bloody conflict in Chechnya has been looked through nearly exclusively through either a Russian state lens--like Hahn's own perspective--or a post 9/11 perspective--which paints, like Hahn, the Chechen rebels as barely different from Al-Qaeda--or an evasive "it's a horrible tragedy" perspective, which is certainly true but misses an in-depth coverage that is needed on both sides.

Hahn's analysis of the various Chechen actors is not bad--though again, in his attempt to paint Russia as the aggrieved stabilizer threatened by evil Chechens, he links everything, even the vaguest and most circumstantial links, to Al-Qaeda. The Arab commander Khattab, for instance, did not belong to Al-Qaeda; nor did he, as Hahn asserts, impose Saudi-style "Wahhabism" in Chechnya (indeed correspondences between rebel leaders showed that Khattab was wary of imposing his interpretation of Islam on the famously assertive Chechens). Instead the growth of Saudi-style "purist Islam" was the result of 1) foreign funds, which were not coercive but probably did make a difference and 2), most importantly, the cooption of the traditional Sufi clergy like Akhmad Kadyrov into the Russian repression, which naturally forced embittered Chechens to look elsewhere to hardline groups.

Hahn's dissection of the Islamic dimension is painful and either willfully selective or ignorant (neither can be discounted in the professional counterterrorism field, which has many embarrassingly underqualified analysts). He is better on inter-Chechen conflicts, but again selective. For instance, it is true that the hardliners like Shamil Basayev made it extremely difficult for Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov to control the briefly independent Islamic republic (1996-99). But Maskhadov was also crippled & undermined by the Russian regime, which in an attempt to consolidate the "tough on terrorism" stances of the corrupt Yeltsin and the hardline Putin always reneged on deals it made with the hard-pressed Maskhadov, only to declare him unfit and incompetent when he was backed into a corner. That goes unmentioned. So does the fact that even the most bloodthirsty and ruthless Chechen commanders, like Basayev, paled in front of the vicious pro-Russian thug Ramzan Kadyrov, who effectively became an unaccountable baron whose violence far outranked that of even Basayev and other extremists. This selectiveness is a major flaw and undermines Hahn's credibility. It is especially bizarre because Hahn does have a ton of useful information on his website. Outside of the dominant Chechen conflict, the problem with the book's stance towards Islam is to view it--as the title implies--purely from a threat perspective, which generates a naturally defensive, reactive, paranoid & self-defeating view (this applies, by the way, not only to Russia but to Western countries like the United States, France & others who have abandoned qualified experts on Islam, Muslim history & conflict resolution in favour of ranting extremists and career scaremongers). Russia does have a significant Muslim minority that it must deal with while protecting the interests of the state & its majority citizens. But paranoid, selective regime loudspeakers like Hahn will not help.
