Anyone wanting a glimpse of the standard battletank of the U.S. Arny, this book is it! Up to date and with numerous pictures of the Abrams tank, short but to the point, the text is crisp and factual. Definatly a keeper for modelling masters like me!

I got my hands on this book a few weeks ago since eventually I plan to build a model of this tank.

I am by no means what they call a "rivet counter" so I can't really speak to any of the more esoteric or highly technical aspects of the book or what's presented in it, but I can speak to the fact that it is a treasure trove of images that have come in pretty handy already at the very least to identify parts.

It's really well presented, great photos and detail shots that include clear descriptions. Again, I am by no means someone who can say what every part is on an actual vehicle but this book has been invaluable for me to start planning my new project!

Kudos to Chris and Brett on a great title.

Bought two dozen copies of this new book to sell at a local show in Canada along other new titles.. Had a look at it and was very much impressed with detail, coverage and access the book provides.. It's meant at the hobbiest and it is very good value for money. Needless to say that I was sold out of 20+ copies in 4 hours.. Buy a copy if you can find one

Industry Standard Reference on LTE - Everything you need to know

As a field applications engineer working in the field of test and measurement, I was looking for a book to effectively bring me up to date on the latest standards in LTE testing. My own background cover RF, digital modulation techniques, and other standards, so I came into this book with a base of knowledge to expand into LTE. I make that statement because if you are a casual reader or "just interested", this book is definitely not for you. If you just want a survey of LTE technology, it is provided in Chapter 1, but that is merely 11 of the 400 pages in this tome. For basic knowledge, just google LTE.

If you are a serious student looking to understand the technology, where it stands today, its future limits, and how it is implemented, then look no further than this comprehensive work on LTE. It is already the industry standard, and likely to be the desk reference for any engineer working on LTE. Whatever can be explained in clear english is explained that way, including many diagrams and illustrations to illuminate the text.

The book covers basics of OFDM modulation techniques, equalization, multi-antenna techiniques, link adaptation, scheduling, LTE architeture, and physical transmission concerns. Indeed, an engineer working in LTE must be concerned with everything from antenna design to data formatting to spectral emission shape, and this book covers each of these topics in turn.

On top of everything, there is a well-organized index if you need to jump around the book, a list of abbreviations and acronyms, and a comprehensive list of references for further reading. As with all Academic Press books in this series (see my review on MIMO), it is well bound and will stand up to lots of reading.

If your job description includes (or if you are looking for a job that will include) LTE, buy this book. If you are an interesed amateur, save your money and get some free education on the web first.

Good coverage of the lower layers of LTE

This book does a good job covering the lower layers of LTE from the antenna up to the RLC. I wish it had more detail in the upper layers and the overall network especially the Enhanced Packet Core. It also lacks much material on the security aspects of LTE. I also wish it mentioned how carriers are adopting LTE and migrating EDGE and 3G to LTE. I also felt like the font was too small and made reading for long periods difficult

In short this is a good book if your interest is geared towards learning the physical and link layer aspects of LTE.

Excellent technical resource and foray into mobile communications

This book's main focus is on mobile communication 3G up to LTE (4G) and in particular radio access network (RAN). This is written by experts in this field (Ericsson) who are personally involved in the telecommunications design.

This book starts with a good overview of the telecommunications technology changes starting from GSM, leading to evolution of 4G / LTE. Basics such as spectrum allocation, link adaptation, radio interface architecture, access procedure relating to LTE cell search down to PHY level such as multi antenna techniques are covered. Where necessary, simple mathematical representations or computations, such as bandwidth utilization, channel capacity are shown. It briefly provides a simple overview of the core network (CN) component of system architecture evolution (SAE).

With an engineering background on 802.11, the mathematical coverage on OFDM and single carrier transmission appeals to me.

And for topics such as the access procedure for LTE cell search, it first lists the sequences, which is (1) Acquisition of frequency and symbols synchronization to cell,(2)Acquisition of frame timing of cell, which is determining the start of the downlink frame (3) Determination of physical layer CELL ID of cell. From here, it further delves into the specifics, providing tons of technical background and information. This is the approach used throughout the book, starting with general background information and ending with more technical details.

At times, I find the information too overwhelming for someone not involved in mobile communications design. However, this book remains a good resource both for novices and experts. I do highly recommend this book.

A Stand Out Series

I have really enjoyed Mr. Chesser's series so far (finished book 3).

There are some things that really stand out that make this different than many of the books out there. First, Mr. Chesser can write intelligently about the things that are happening, or exist, in his stories. Prime examples are his understanding of firearms and military equipment. I don't know if this is through personal experience, or through research, but too often you see minor giveaways in this genre that take away from the believability (such as a military person referring to a magazine as a "clip").

Second, he takes the time to develop charactors who he has every intention of killing off ASAP. This means, not every major charactor survives, and that is what we expect from a zom-poc.

There was only one thing that had me thinking..."Oh, come on...", but that happened in book 2, so I'll not bring it up here.

It's a must read!

Good read.

This was a good read especially for the price. I thought it was well written. This appears to be his first novel, but you wouldn't know that from reading the book. I didn't see any inaccuracies or anything that required me to suspend reality with the exception of people rising from the dead. But that is to be expected from the title of the book. If you like the zombie and/or the post apocalypse genre, you will like this book.

About the Author
Philip Butterworth is Reader in Medieval Theatre at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds. He is the author of Theatre of Fire: Special Effects in Early English and Scottish Theatre, and has published widely in journals on the subject of Medieval Theatre, including essays in 'Medieval English Theatre'. He is currently working, with Joslin McKinney, on The Cambridge Introduction to Scenography, to be published in 2006.

An important addition to conjuring and stage literature

Coming, as it does, from an academic author and the Cambride University Press, there's no surprise in the scholarly, and often pedantic, character of the prose found in this publication. It draws heavily from classical conjuring-related texts such as Scott's DISCOUERIE OF WITCHCRAFT, and to a lesser degree, Ady's A CANDLE IN THE DARK. The extended quotations in the text are of a font size that put a strain my aging eyes as well, but they'll likely prove no problem for most readers.

Author Butterworth excels in bringing to light numerous passages from contemporary medieval and renaissance financial documents, listing various jugglers (conjurers), expressing their play dates, the contents of their programs and what they were paid. His listing of connections to the fraudulent use of trickery by the church, among other institutions and individuals, is also quite interesting, as are the conjuring-related "feats of activity." The theatrical "special effects" noted are very interesting as well. As noted, a fair amount of the content is found in other works, including the profiles of several personalities the author sketches. Butterworth credits Edwin Dawes (who wrote the Foreword), perhaps the world's leading current exponent of magic history, for his assistance. Dawes hand seems apparent in some of the profiles provided, which is a good thing. This text is, however, unique in its combination of information from the periods discussed. I believe it's safe to say there exists no other work to date capable of matching MAGIC ON THE EARLY ENGLISH STAGE's comprehensive content. All of the information is thoroughly credited and annotated. Indeed, the Appendix and Notes sections comprise nearly a third of the book. The book's price is more in line with what one would expect to pay for a college text than for a smallish hardbound tome for the general reader. As a student of magic history, though, I very much enjoyed it and believe those with similar interests will as well.

About the Author
Bob Katz played the B flat clarinet from the age of 10, and his lifelong love of sound and music led him to become a professional recording, mixing and mastering engineer (since 1971). Three of his recordings have garnered the GrammyT award and many others have been lauded in publications such as Stereo Review, Audio, and Stereophile. He has written over one hundred articles for audio and computer publications, and is an inventor and manufacturer with processors and support gear in use at mastering studios worldwide. His most recent patent-pending inventions, the K-Stereo and K-Surround Processors, fill a missing link in the mastering and post- production pantheon. He has been a workshops, facilities and section chairman of the AES and has given lectures in several countries. Currently, Bob runs Digital Domain Studios just north of Orlando, Florida.

Mostly for Mastering Engineers... but...

The discussion of how iTunes works and how to take advantage of its new High Resolution format is useful and eye-opening for any recording musician, whether pro or amateur. It'll give you ideas for maximizing the quality of your recording from beginning to end, it's filled with great colorful illustrations, and even though it's very technical, as a layman I understood the language throughout, thanks to some very well-presented glossaries.

If you are just a music listener curious about iTunes from a consumer perspective, skip this book. It is decidedly not for you.

Important information in a breezy read

The near-magical art of mastering audio goes back many decades. It's adapted time and time again, moving from the physical aspects of LP cutting through CD and now into the world of digital audio distribution. At every stage, the mastering engineer has done everything possible to match the music to the medium and ensure the most pleasant and true experience possible. While the hour it takes to read through this little volume won't make you into a mastering engineer, it will give the the beginnings of the toolset you want. More importantly, it may help to persuade you that it's a toolset you really need.

Those of us who've been in the business for a while are well aware of the so-called 'loudness wars'. It's the constant battle to make each musical release louder than the last, in the hopes it will rise to the top of the pile when it comes to airplay. It's been enormously damaging to the overall quality of recording. Bob Katz makes that point without preaching; more importantly he shows why it's a losing battle. More and more playback systems (and some legal restrictions) aim toward reproducing music with a uniform perceived loudness. Those pumped-up recording just get pushed down so they coexist nicely with the others. If that reduces those panicky lunges at my level control, then I'm all for it! A rather good portion of this brief book deals with the subject of loudness--really quite different from maximum level. Katz talks about how we perceive it and how playback systems can be tripped up by it. This is more than a minor issue. Even if your intent is to pump that volume, the actual act of coding and playing music may give you problems you never intended.

Although the book has iTunes as a prominent part of the title, I haven't even mentioned that until this point in the review. A great deal of what Katz has to say is of more general importance. But he gives you plenty to chew on for an iTunes-specific dinner. He talks about how iTunes fetches track names when you insert a CD, as well as how you can set that data up correctly. He discusses some free tools from Apple that can help you get the most out of encoding a song. He discusses some of his favorite tools--especially level meters. Throughout he maintains a lively and helpful tone, leaving you eager for more.

You'll Want To Read It Twice (At Least)

The book's title initially fooled me - I thought it might be nothing more than a glossy guide to "mastering" Apple's iTunes application.
I was wrong and the name Bob Katz should have tipped me off to the depth of technical detail and the passionate argument for quality audio that comes through every page.

"Mastering Music For iTunes" is not a tutorial on digital audio mastering (If you're interested, check out Katz's "Mastering Audio" text - it's one of the bibles of the industry). While mastering engineers will appreciate the technical depth, the book's audience is anyone in the music production chain from musician, mix and mastering engineers, producer and marketers with an interest in producing high quality digital audio.

With downloaded music now a dominant form of distribution and Apple's iTunes store a major point of sales, submitting the highest quality audio files to Apple under the guidelines of their Mastered for iTunes (MfiT) program requires some technical understanding. For many engineers, that means some changes to their traditional workflow of targeting CD and vinyl media. Traditional mastering tasks such as inserting pauses, balancing individual track loudness have changed, as has the very concept of an 'album' of assembled tracks. "The book's stated goal is not to make every reader an expert in audio encoding, loudness normalization, metadata, sample rate conversion and the benefits of preserving headroom, but rather to provide a working foundation enabling intelligent discussion and collaboration.

I'm an amateur musician with more experience in low-level software development than mastering audio but it fascinated me to see how the inherent lack of floating-point precision in microprocessor math operations I've been aware of for years has shaped and influenced software built on top of it, including digital recording and mastering tools. Subtle and counterintuitive artifacts and behaviors are often introduced (such as the substantial growth in audio file size as a result of effects processing - which is often nothing but an overlay of repeated floating point calculations). I found the comparison to digital photography effects such as dithering and pixelation spot on and it clarified a lot of the heavier detail, as did the many software screen shots of analyzed signals.

The book gives a good grounding in high-resolution audio, compression and limiting and their influence on loudness, and presents examples from a variety of software tools to give a sense of what's available to the contemporary engineer. None of the material is at the tutorial level and it's assumed that someone looking for technical depth already has a substantial background. The writing is lucid and lively and the pictorial layout of the book will make it a pleasure for non-technical readers with a serious interest in the topic.

If you've followed Bob Katz's writing and his blog you're familiar with his happy warrior stance in the "loudness wars". The tone of "Matering Music for iTunes" is upbeat; Katz feels that Apple's Mastering for iTunes program has provided him with ammunition and tools to support his case for preserving headroom and with it the spacious dynamics that are for him the hallmark of quality musical production. As someone from the same generation who shares much of his perspective, I hope he's right.

As a target reader I probably fall somewhere in between technical and non - I've recorded and mixed my own music in analog and digital for years but am self-taught and know merely the basics of mastering. Still, I found the book set off many ideas I want to explore and I imagine re-reading it and keeping it close to my studio desk for some time.

Wonderful conclusion to the series

I absolutely adored WAR PRIZE, her next one was OK, but WARLORD is exceptional. I know it was better because I had read WAR PRIZE, so if possible read it first. If not you are still caught in a wonderful world and will want to read it the first chance you get. Elizabeth Vaughan is one very talented writer, I find it hard to believe this is her first series of books. I can't wait for the next one.

Lara and Kier have finally reached the Plains, now she must prove herself to the people. She and Kier are seperated and she is taken to the heart of the plains to go before the Elders. Many are very welcomeing and many are not. There is treachery and betrayal at many points but Lara comes through as a sincere loving woman willing to give up much for her Warlord and his people.

Kier is busy rounding up support and sneaking in to hold his woman in his arms. Togather they will face every trial and with the solid support of friends and admirers they surely will prevail.

This book is so great, never a monent of boredom, always something happening. It is never the expected always the unexpected. I adored it. It held my attention from cover to cover. Do not miss it.

Wonderful Conclusion to a Masterful Series!

I LOVED Warprize and enjoyed Warsworn as well, so it's not surprising that I ate up Warlord, just as excellent as the first book of the series, in my opinion.

This book takes place where Warsworn left off (if you haven't read Warprize and Warsworn yet, stop reading right now and go read, otherwise the rest of this review won't make sense) with Lara, Keir, and the others headed towards the Heart of the Plains.

We end up in the Heart and meet some great new secondary characters along the way. I love the way Vaughan develops the secondary characters. They're not filler like in other books and are actually developed and engaging. Each character serves a purpose in furthering and enriching the story.

Of course, there are conflicts once Lara arrives for her confirmation. She represents great change, after all, and that's never an easy thing to accept. Her presence among the People of the Plains creates great conflict and tension in the novel, as well as great tension in the romantic relationship between Lara and Keir. They are separated for a good 100 pages almost, by the rule of the Council, but you never stop feeling their yearning to get back to each other and it's very touching (especially in one scene where they're a bit naughty and break the rules).

The falling action had me at the edge of my seat, I totally didn't know what was going to happen next and there were some really great emotional scenes here.

I agree with what one person said about the ending being a bit unresolved, but, I guess, Elizabeth Vaughan was trying to be a bit more realistic since times are uncertain in this world (think back to Marcus's "death comes in an instant") and although the hero/heroine are happily together at the end, they still have a lot of work ahead of them in merging and improving their societies.

Great ending to a fresh voiced series

And so it ends. Warlord brings to a close the stories of Lara and Keir which began two years ago in the surprising debut of Warprize and continued in last year's Warsworn. In a genre full of vampires, werewolves, dukes and carriages, this series brings the reader back to a simpler time when all people had was the earth and each other to rely on.

Warsworn brought us from the city dwellers and onto the journey of Lara and Keir to the Plains where Keir would present his Warprize to the Council, be affirmed, and begin to effectuate change that would benefit his people. The people of the plains were dying at a greater rate that the society was being repopulated. Some of it was because of internal violence. Some of it was because of disease. Keir the Cat saw an opportunity to tie himself with a city and avail his tribe of the richness and knowledge that the city had with the traditions, customs and knowledge of the Plains people.

During Warsworn, however, many of Keir's people died of a plague that was brought upon them by Lara's insistence on treating a village who were plague striken. It is honorable to die in combat but not because of sickness. Keir, as Warlord, is responsible for his people and the Council will judge accordingly.

The strength of these stories is the unique world that is created. There are specific customs that must be followed as Lara becomes affirmed as a Warprize. It is an honor and Lara has the opportunity to return to the land of Zy and the comforts and familiarity of home or even choose a different Warlord. During much of the book, Lara is separated from Keir due to customs of the Firelanders as Keir answers for the loss of his warriors and Lara's status as Warprize is debated. Lara's life is at risk, as well, as many within the Firelanders fear change a city dweller like her shall bring.

I loved the imagery of the people, their way of life, and the beauty of the plains. This is no wall paper fantasy story and much of the magic lies within the detailed recreation of celebration of elements (earth, wind, fire, air) and the rules and customs by which the Firelanders lived. Less loved by me where the constant heroics of Lara in the field of medicine and the lengthy separation, not to mention everyone's seeming captivation with chess, a game that Lara has introduced.

At the close of the book, however, I couldn't help but want more. Surely there is more story to tell as Keir the Cat and Lara of Xy attempt to merge together a better future for their people. B.
