About the Author

Sarah Kane was born in 1971. Her work includes the plays Blasted, Phaedra's Love, Cleansed, 4.48 Psychosis and the short film Skin. Sarah Kane died in 1999, aged 28, and is now recognised as one of the most influential voices in modern European theatre.

this play is intense

I've read many of Sarah Kane's plays...and hated them all. However, this specific play of hers hits so deaply at what it means to be truly depressed, it's scary. 4.48 psychosis represents 4:48 am, the time when most people commit suicide. This in itself show how horribly, and yet beautifully, intense this book is. In fact, this was Sarah Kane's last play before she committed suicide, very soon afterwards. The writing of the play is completely manifested to meet with the minds of those who are depressed, with words scattered across the page...repeated phrases...intense images...and much more. If you're trying to do a quick and easy play to this one, forget it. However, if you can ever find a way to make this play come alive on the stage, i'll travel anywhere to watch it. This book is for the lover of vocabulary, the person trying to find the perfect words to describe an intense emotion and sense of mind. This may be the one play that accomplishes it completely. It's short and worth it...I gauruntee it'll interest you.

a saner life tomorrow

I read the text three times this year and saw a german performance on stage. I think the text is difficult to perform because there is no real dialogue in the text. The play is like a poem to me. The more you read the text, the more you feel the rhythm of the words.

The play consists of an inner monologue about the feelings and experiences of Sarah Kane. This is intersected by a dialogue between her and a doctor. The central aspect of the play is the unanswered love to a person she will never meet. It causes the pain she describes in her monologue. Her medical treatment in hospital influences the drama. She wants to detach the body from the soul. In this moment she can only be by herself, especially when she cuts her arms. It gives her the energy to go on because she wants to live. In the end she hasn't got the strength to carry on because her love is unrequited. The psychosis on 4.48 in the morning is the result of the lack of happiness in her life. The problems she shows us in the text are common in everyone lives but it is not as extreme in ours as in hers.

After forty pages you feel a void and a desired to cease the tension. But you can't help it. Let Sarah go and don't idolize her.

With no character names, loose dialogue, and not set the play weaves through internal and external monologues, displaying the pain,loneliness, and saddness that is the life of the mentally ill. This piece is ideal for those looking for an abstract modern play that can be done on a budget.

Fascinating and instructive

Joe Sacco is a genius. I'm so glad he decided to forge a career combining his talents in graphic art and journalism. I read Sacco's book on Palestine, and The Mediator, and am now finishing Gorazde. I'm reading them in Spanish and they are very well translated from the original English.

Criticism means a bad grade. For anyone interested

This book is required reading for students who take Dr. Seaward's classes. Therefore, he receives money for teaching and from their purchasing this book. As far as I can tell, most of his "classes" are on-line, so he can "teach" many classes at one time. Therefore it is especially important that the material is appropriately and expertly presented. However, there are many problems with both Dr. Seaward and the book.
First, Dr. Seaward has had no training in psychology. He received a Ph.D in Physical Education from the University of Maryland, not a degree in Philosophy as listed on his C.V. He makes an odd statement about Interdisciplinary Major: Health Psychology; Special Emphasis: Psychophysiology, which is not possible with a doctorate program.
He also states his membership in Phi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society: The University of Maryland, 1986. This is impossible for two reasons. Phi Alpha Epsilon is an academic, discipline-specific honor society for architectural engineering only and has no chapter at the University of Maryland.
His claim of a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois is interesting as that degree was to someone with a different middle name. So he either changed his name between 1981 and 1986 or he "borrowed" the degree from someone with a similar name.
In any case, Dr. Seaward, at the least,has greatly misrepresented himself and has no training appropriate for either writing this book or teaching a course on managing stress.
But about the book. I am a physician and one of our employees is taking this class on-line. Some statements in the book came up and so I started reading some parts of it. In one place, the book makes a flyover about the differences between how men and women handle stress. He makes the statement women often throw their babies in dumpsters and men drink beer and play golf. He then uses, as examples, Martin Luther King and Gandhi as peaceful men, with no information about their handling stress. It is disjointed, inaccurate, misleading, and meaningless.
He describes adrenal glands as being the size of grapefruit. He basically seems to have written the whole thing off in a hurry and has gotten away with it because the students are vulnerable. Criticism means a bad grade.
For anyone interested, seriously, about this book, please purchase it or check it out of a nearby library. It, I fear, is the tip of an embarrassing aspect of current on-line teaching, where there is no oversight, little critical analysis, and people are able to take great advantage of this by teaching numerous courses simultaneously and requiring their students purchase books they have authored.

This is a good book!

I actually had to have this book for a class and I decided I'm tired of getting stuck with schoolbooks, so I rented this one. This is one I may actually buy on purpose! It has a lot of information without droning on and on. It is easy to read and teaches so much so quickly. I think it would be a good reference book as well.

I love this book so much.I ended up paying $90 for my copy in a rush to find it few copy surface anymore so if you want it buy it because they don't come up veay often.This book is one of the best reference books for the long forgotten Show Rods or Kitch Cars.This book covers all the best of the crazy show cars of the 70's from some of them include The Magic Carpet,The Rickshaw,Martian Spider,DDT,Farm Yard Roadster,Tri-Pod,Woodburner,Bathtub Buggy,V8 roadster,Beer Wagon and The Nirto Express and although its not in color it well worth the money I paid $90 for my copy and in my opinion its worth double that

La novela es bastante buena, pero no es de la novela de la que hablaré como tal en esta reseña.

La traducción esta muy mal hecha lo cual hace la lectura molesta, forzada y a momentos, las frases ni siquiera tienen sentido. El estilo del traductor no es neutral, está muy marcado por sus propias expresiones coloquiales, que si bien intenta cubrir no lo consigue del todo.

Tuve la oportunidad de leer el libro en inglés después de que lo leí en español y la diferencia entre lo que quiso decir el traductor y lo que de verdad decía la autora es abismal. De haber conseguido un mejor traductor, este libro habría sido mucho más ameno y más interesan.

En un principio no podemos ver o comprender como es el rompecabezas. Y las piezas no encajan. Debido a que no siempre lo que vemos es la realidad de lo que acontece alrededor de la trama y los protagonistas. Pero les aseguro que uno queda totalmente sorprendido. Ahora comprendo donde está situada esta novela es totalmente diferente a lo que había leído. Se las recomiendo es excelente.

SHERIDAN TITMAN

Sheridan Titman holds the McAllister Centennial Chair in Financial Services at the University of Texas. He has a B.S. from the University of Colorado and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas, Professor Titman was a Professor at UCLA, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Boston College and spent the 1988–89 academic year in Washington, D.C., as the special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy. In addition, he has consulted for a variety of financial institutions and corporations. He has served on the editorial boards of the leading academic finance and real estate journals, was an editor of the Review of Financial Studies, and was the founding editor of the International Review of Finance. He has served as President of the American Finance Association and the Western Finance Association, and as a director of the American Finance Association, the Asia Pacific Finance Association, the Western Finance Association, and the Financial Management Association and as the President of the Western Finance Association. Professor Titman has published more than 50 articles in both academic and professional journals and a book entitled Financial Markets and Corporate Strategy. He has received a number of awards for his research excellence and is a Fellow of the Financial Management Association and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Re-search.

Over his career, he has published more than 50 articles in the leading finance journals and served in a number of editorial positions, including the coeditorship of the FMA Survey and Synthesis Series for the Oxford University Press. In addition, he has coauthored the following books: Financial Management, 12th edition (Prentice Hall Publishing Company); Foundations of Finance, 8th edition (Prentice Hall Publishing Company); Financial Analysis (McGraw-Hill Publishing Company); The Theory of Finance (Dryden Press); and Value Based Management (Harvard Business School Press/Oxford University Press).

John and Sally have two wonderful sons, the world’s finest daughter-in-law (their youngest son isn’t married), and two beautiful grandsons who visit them often on their ranch outside of Crawford, Texas, where they raise hay and enjoy life with their chickens, dogs (Jack, Minnie, and Pearl) and miniature donkeys (Lottie, Dottie, Wavy, Gravy, and Biscuit).

Great content. Bad, bad Kindle edition DRM.

It's hard to know how many stars to give a book like this. The book is a great textbook, although there are still a lot of errors in the slides if you use this as an instructor. It's much improved over the previous edition. I give it 5 stars for what it is: a good undergraduate-level textbook that I use to supplement a case-based class.

The problem is the DRM associated with this book. This content cannot be viewed in either Kindle for Win8 or in Kindle Cloud Viewer, for no reason I can determine. You also get only two licenses: if you put this on your work computer and your home computer, don't expect to be able to access it from a mobile device as well. Because I've never seen those kind of restrictions before, I was entirely unprepared for them. It was a very unpleasant surprise to set up someplace with my laptop to prepare for my next lecture and find out I wasn't allowed to access the book.

Quick tip: although the error message you'll get when you exceed two downloads says you have to deregister any other devices with the content, you don't - and in fact, if you don't delete the content and re-sync first, deregistering won't help. Delete the content, then sync the device, and that will open another license. Also, if you're on Windows 8, the error message you get just says "you can't use this content in Windows 8," and you'll get a similar message in Cloud Reader. Neither bothers to let you know that there's a third way to view Kindle content on a Win 8 computer: Kindle for PC. Use that and you should be able to read your content.

5 stars for the content. 0 for the restrictive DRM, bad information, and absolutely moronic viewing restrictions. Great work by Sheridan Titman and John Martin, but Amazon and Prentice Hall really outdid themselves trying to screw it up.
