All of these evolved into their present form in a relatively limited area of western Europe from the mid sixteenth century onwards, and it is there that we find the major writings that relate in a recognizable way to contemporary mathematics.

Yet another good but not great sourcebook

Fresh translations of important mathematical texts are of course always a welcome and valuable resource, but this book can hardly be said to be superior to previous sourcebooks. The selections at times seem quite arbitrary and the editor's introductions are brief and superficial (incidentally, they are also typeset in a larger font size than the actual translations, which I find rather tasteless).

As an illustration of the general shortcomings of the book, I am going to consider the selection from Johann Bernoulli on the use of complex numbers in integration (pp. 468-472). Bernoulli's text itself is a very dry and factual list of rules for transforming integrals using complex substitutions. In particular, it includes the partial fraction decomposition of dx/(1+x^2) into "imaginary logarithmic differentials" (as Bernoulli calls them), i.e., in effect, the integration

arctan(x) = integral of dx/(1+x^2) = integral of (1/2)/(x+i)-(1/2)/(x-i) dx = (1/2)log(x+i/x-i)

"Such transformations were extremely helpful" (p. 468), claims the editor's introduction without further discussion. Such an attitude, I think, undermines the very purpose of a sourcebook, namely to see substantial mathematics with your own eyes instead of being fed vague and unsubstantiated and uncheckable assertions by some historian about which ideas were "extremely helpful." The novelist's adage "show, don't tell" should be an axiom for historians as well---above all for all sourcebook editors. Sadly, in the present case, it is not. Inquisitive readers will suffer accordingly. As later selections in this book illustrates, even the most rudimentary facts about the theory of complex integration were not understood until over a century later. So, then, how exactly was Bernoulli's algebraic hocus-pocus supposed to be "extremely helpful"? What did the logarithm of an imaginary number even mean at this time, if in fact it was a meaningful concept at all?

All of these concerns could have been addressed in a much more satisfactory manner by including Bernoulli's main application of his idea rather than this cryptic table of hocus-pocus "transformations". In 1712 Bernoulli wrote a short and beautiful paper on how to put his imaginary formula to "real" use, namely for finding multiple-angle formulas for tan(a). If we let y=tan(na) and x=tan(a) then arctan(y)=na=narctan(x), so by the above formula for the arctangent we get log(y+i/y-i) = log(x+i/x-i)^n. Complex logarithms may be mysterious but it does not take too much courage to "cancel the log's" in this equation, giving (y+i)(x-i)^n=(x+i)^n(y-i), which is an algebraic relationship between y=tan(na) and x=tan(a), as sought. Bernoulli admits this formula contains "quantitates imaginarias ... quae per se sunt impossibilia"---imaginary quantities which are by themselves impossible. But this, he says, is not a problem since they "in casu quolibet particulari evanescunt"---vanish in any particular case. For example, if n=3 the formula reduces to tan(3a)=(6*tan(a)-2*tan^3(a))/(1-3*tan^2(a). Reducing tan(na) to tan(a) is a hard problem. Bernoulli himself had previously tackled the problem using power series, but now he is quite proud to have carried out the derivation "sine serierum auxilio"---without the help of series. One benefit of this approach, he notes, is that it shows that the relationship is "semper algebraicum"---always algebraic---which is not clear from a series approach. Apparently, he considered working with "impossible quantities" a small price to pay for this added insight and simplicity. (I learned of this paper of Bernoulli's from Stillwell's excellent book, Mathematics and Its History, which I recommend far more highly than any sourcebook for readers who want a "show, don't tell" history of mathematics.)

Re-examining and Rejoicing Our Femininity

In 2002, I remember speakiing to a group of women in the Philippines at a workshop on women's wisdom. When I told them that there is room in this world for everyone to shine because inside all women are fabulous--- I got a lot of unbelieving looks. A lot of women around the world, even in the United States, don't believe that they've got it in them. And that is one of the reasons why I highly recommend this book. Sark's book is about learning to be a wonder-full woman who is not afraid of life. Here "succulent" is defined with these words: ripe, juicy, whole, round, exuberant, wild, rich, wide, deep, firm, rare, female.
Most women, have been raised up to be quiet and demure---keep your legs closed and your thoughts to yourself....etc, etc. Little do we realize that some of these tenets of femininity have suppressed our full expression of who we are and have prevented us from pursuing our dreams. We need to discover for ourselves how we can live life to the fullest.
This book is fun, wild, inspirational, definitely different and it CAN give you ideas on how you, too, can start to find out more about your fullest self. The concepts that Sark gives in her books, starting with "Succulent Wild Woman" are that women need to live life to the utmost and that they need to love themselves so that they can love others, too.
Here are some more of Sark's ideas that can lead you, too, to be your fabulous self: ...Marry yourself first...promise to never leave you... ...discover your own goodness ...dress to please yourself ...you are enough, you have enough, you do enough ...make more mistakes! And more thoughts on healing, fat, money and power, community, love and romance...
What's more, there's little whining in this book---one of her best ideas is: end blaming... She's got honest, good stuff about facing our insecurities, faults and fears.
I urge all of you timid and insecure women(and don't most of us start out this way?) to find your fabulous, succulent, bodacious selves.... to express yourselves....to find as much support you can get from friends, loved-ones and books like Sark's (and all other great books).... and to get out there and live a life full of love---the romantic kind is only part of this... the Universal kind is what you learn to be embraced by when you are your fullest, most succulent self!

the best of SARK's books

I hadn't thought about this book for a while, but in going back to some old thoughts I began to ponder it again.

SARK peaked with this book. It seemed to me to be the fullest, most open of her books. Other readers have dismissed it as too fluffy or overly "look-on-the-bright-side", but sometimes we need those things (and it isn't always true of this book; read on). SARK even says that she is not always a positive person, though because of her books and her public demeanor people tend to think that it must be easy for her.

On the surface the book looks rather simple: bright colors, little drawings. It's relaxing to look at and generally invokes a positive vibe.
However, upon investigating deeper the reader learns of some of SARK's past: sexual abuse by an older brother, various addictions and such. I've seen some reviews that say that the readers felt uncomfortable about purchasing the book after seeing the incest and abuse parts. Unfortunately, these forms of abuse are a very real (and sad) fact of life for many people; I am lucky that I have never experienced this, but I know people that have, and yes, it is ugly and uncomfortable. If we ignore it, or in this case throw out the book because there are uncomfortable issues in it, that cycle will all the more easily continue. This aspect of the book helps SARK to iterate that her life hasn't been all about rainbows and eating mangoes naked. People *should* feel an emotional response to this part, but it should be anger (for her sake, not at her) rather than discomfort.
It's somewhat difficult to reconcile the two images of SARK -- her darker past and her current, seemingly better-adjusted self -- but it is a sign that even someone with such issues can get out of that state.

SARK also delves into her imperfections, and it can be a little intense to see all the therapies that she has partaken in; this again emphasizes that she is not perfect and that life is not easy, though it does come across as a little obsessive at times.

A definite plus is her encouragement for women to further flower in their own femininity. This can inspire those who are repressed, depressed, confused, in a slump or just need to remember. I also don't think that this book is restricted to women only; there is plenty of information that can apply to men too, and can also help them to realize some of the issues that women face and ways that they can respond. I do tend to think though that many men would feel rather self-conscious carrying around this book, which does have a distinct female flair. I applaud those who are strong enough in themselves that they can move beyond this feeling and read the book anyway.

In addition to the printed book, I used to have the audio casette version, which in some ways was even more fulfilling, as you get to hear her speak the actual lines, as well as some improvisational expansion. I wish that it was out on CD.

I must say, I was amazed that I was so receptive to SARK's sometimes gregariously positive messages, since I am a pretty cynical person. Some of her suggestions for being "succulent" are a little too New Age for my taste, but I incorporated a few of her ideas when I was at a bad spot and they did help me. I would suggest that the reader pick what personally feels best and blend it with their own beliefs, traditions or meditations.

Could I subsist on a constant diet of SARK? No. But in many ways this book is a nice little vacation from a lot of the aspects of daily reality. I'm disappointed that her more recent books didn't feel as lush and often seemed hurried or *too* lightweight ("Change Your Life Without Getting Out of Bed" in particular). I drifted off from SARK for a while and thus haven't read her most recent book ("Make Your Creative Dreams Real"), which looks more calculatedly self-help-y, and I probably won't. Among the books of the SARK oeuvre, "Succulent Wild Woman" is the one to come back to. Enjoy it.

Amazing to get permission to be free...

This was one of the first books I was introduced to when I was looking for a change in my life. I was looking for purpose and freedom. This book delivered...not only in the content but in the experience of the book. The book is written like a diary and I was blown away by the way it all unfolded. I came away with a new direction and a vision for my life. Get the book...sit on your patio...drink something wonderful and relax and read. This is an amazing find.

Good hardcore Gen 3/4 Engine Book

In the late-'90s, when I began covering the LS1 engine and it's truck engine siblings for magazines, there were no good technical books, other than Factory Service Manuals, on these engines. What a difference a decade makes. Today, there are many books on the Gen 3/4 engines, most good and some bad.

This book, How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines is one of the good ones...in spite of one of its little problems being the title itself. This book, by Texas Speed and Performance technician and ls1tech.com moderator, Joseph Potak, is really about how to properly assemble a high-performance street or racing Gen 3/4 engine. Content on modifications is pretty limited to engine hard parts and there's little or nothing on camshaft choices, headers, superchargers, nitrous oxide systems or other parts with which you'd modify an LS-series engine. This "problem" really isn't much of an issue-I look at it more as a typographical error in the title than anything else-because this book is a useful reference to anyone, especially DIY's, who are blueprinting and assembling a high-performance Gen 3/4 engine.

The book covers short block parts identification, machine work, short block assembly and upper end assembly and it does it with more detail than other books on the Gen 3s and 4s which I've reviewed. That is a good thing because the Gen 3/4 engine builders in the hobby are hungry for information. This book feeds that appetite.
On the modification front, there is useful information on aftermarket crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons and cylinder heads but, again, the information is limited and that limiting is a good thing. It allows the depth to which Potak goes in covering machine work and assembly.

Another aspect of this book which makes it a good read-or maybe I should say: a good look-is its photography. Imagery is important in a how-to book such as this. How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines abounds with large photos which are well lit and show clear details of what's covered in the text.

The book does have a few quirks, such as slang terminology. Use of the hobby's general term "power adder" is common. They're not "power adders." They are "superchargers", "turbochargers" or "nitrous oxide injection systems". The strange phrase "oil journal clearance" is used for main an rod "bearing clearance"-what's an "oil journal, anyway? The word "larger" is used in discussions of camshaft profiles but more aggressive cams are not "larger". They may have longer durations and higher lifts but the cams are the same size.

The book also suffers a little because of its design. Apparently, to the book's Art Director, trendy looking pages trump the need to supply good content to readers. While the photos in this book are quite good and a cut above some books on the same subject from Motorbooks' competitors, many pages are designed with images on the left and, on the right, captions, set in teeny-tiny type, afloat on expansive white spaces. The captions are hard to read and the white space is a waste. Sheesh. Fill that space with more information on Gen 3/4 engines!

Executive summary: yeah, the book as a few design problems and a slightly misleading title but the meat and potatoes of How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines is good stuff. This book now has a spot on my Gen 3/4 bookshelf.

Excellent book

If you work on or do mods on your LSx engine, then this book is a must-have, regardless of whether you're a raw novice, a seasoned pro, or a tech who works on these engines for a living. The book has substantial content fitted into the standard Motorbooks format/size, and contains many, many color pictures with detailed explanations and procedures that do not appear in the GM Service Manual. This book can be read either way: from cover to cover, or at random pages, or even backwards; it is layed out very well. The edge of the pages have a color coded section "tab" so you can quickly thumb to the section of interest. I can't put the book down, good job!!

Highly Suggested Reading for Any LSx Enthusiast!

I bought this book to simply brush up on the basics of LSx building and was pleasantly surprised that it goes much farther into this platform than that! Mr. Potak included a multitude of images that should help even the newest of LSx enthusiasts jump into modifying this powerful engine series with a good plan and the knowledge needed to complete their project safely and efficiently! I highly recommend this book for any LSx powered vehicle owner! Thanks Mr. Potak!

"The Fiendishness of It"

Charles Birkin's The Smell of Evil is a collection of horror stories. But there are very few tales of supernatural goings-on. Birkin's stories are full of monsters, but there are no blood-sucking vampires rising from their graves at night, no Satan worshipers or witchcraft, and no multi-tentacle bearing creatures from the deep sea or another universe threatening mankind. Birkin's stories can be considered contes cruels (cruel tales) and most of his monsters are mankind itself--the worst kind of monsters that can inhabit a story--because human monsters can be real and more hideous of a creation than the worst creature of the paranormal.

The thirteen stories that comprise The Smell of Evil have a diverse lot of settings, situations, and characters. One thing the stories all have in common is that they are very well written and usually involve ordinary characters who suddenly find themselves thrust into extraordinary situations. Running throughout the stories is the author's macabre sensibilities often laced with a bit of sardonic humor.

In the collection's title story, "The Smell of Evil," a writer on a retreat to "a tiny and unspoiled village on Cornwall's southern coast" stumbles upon a malicious plot to steal the fortune of a young, beautiful, crippled and speech-impaired French heiress. It is quite the nasty bit of goings-on. Two missionaries in Namavava working with native peoples who are "very poor linguists" discover the dangers of too literal of an interpretation of Biblical verse in "Text for Today." "The Godmothers" offers up a vicious little tale about a serial murder who is caring for his grandchild. Prize-winning roses and flowers are rooted in more than ordinary soil in "Green Fingers" and exposes readers to some very gruesome irony on numerous levels. A number of people learn an important maxim, even if it is too late, about the ills of drunkenness in "The Lesson" at the hands of an innocent child. Violent, callous murder in cold blood for the most calculated and twisted reason lies behind events in "The Interloper" with a mocking twist at the end.

"`Is There Anybody There?'" by many appearances is a traditional ghost story as two, long-time retired friends take up company in a cottage that is rumored to be "haunted." For one of the two, being left alone in the dwelling brings voices, visions, fears and threats, but the story's conclusion, although haunting and more than a bit tongue-in-cheek, leaves doubt as to whether or not there were ever ghosts involved. Likewise, in "The Cornered Beast" readers are likely to assume they have encountered a tale of a hideous, murdering creature until they reach the last paragraph of the story. Less doubtful, however, is "Little Boy Blue" in which an eight and a half year-old child creates "a dream friend"--one that is tired of being "lonely" and lethal tragedy ensues. "Ballet Nègre" also by all appearances contains supernatural elements as Londoners are enthralled by stunning performances of the "Ballet Nègre du Port-au-Prince" as they perform a variety of voodoo-inspired dances and a newspaper reviewer is determined to interview the star performers. The ending of the tale is one of Birkin's most grisly ones.

Although Birkin generally shies away from gore and the more outlandish and gruesome aspects of many horror writers does not mean that his stories cannot be shocking. In "`Dance Little Lady'" a drunken trio trying to escape arrest during a barroom brawl unknowingly take refuge in a morgue and Birkin's tale flirts with elements of necrophilia. "The Serum of Doctor White" has forces of medical science and those who would instead turn to "the power of prayer" doing battle for the health and life of a seven year old girl. Some of the terror of the story arrives from the fact that no one in the narrative could ever imagine or desire the girl to be harmed, but the girl's hideous fate is truly flabbergasting. It is, perhaps, the most the most agonizing story in the collection.

In spite of one callous, sometime brutal tale after another, The Smell of Evil ends on a snide, comic note with "The Cross." In spite of the humor of the piece, Birkin uses the story to make one final, mordant observation about the evolution of the human species.

The tales in The Smell of Evil are creative, striking, and oftentimes unique and reflect an exceptional talent and mind. For readers who enjoy a macabre thrill, Birkin's work is a real find. [The Valancourt re-issue includes an informative Introduction by John Llewellyn Probert.]

Enjoyable with one story of sheer brilliance

An enjoyable book of short horror stories by Charles Birkin with one story of sheer brilliance. Hilde Berger is flattered and enjoys the attentions of Herr Major Karl Schultz but her real love is the garden as it flourishes and blooms and each year she wins many accolades and awards at the local flower show..."The garden, too, which was spacious, covering as it did more than an acre, was a credit to her industry. The closely weeded gravel walks enclosed oblong or triangular beds of roses, while during the summer months a hedge of sweet peas at the end of the main path of shaven grass shut off the vegetable section from view. On this July day both roses and sweet peas were at their peak." The good Major always arrives with his lorry and trusty "kapo" the latter ensuring that the garden always looks well and that the displays are immaculate. There is however a price to be paid and the realization when presented is both a joy and a horror to an unsuspecting reader.

So far, so good...

I'm an avid reader and have ordered dozens of books through Amazon, but this is the first one I've taken the time to write a review for, because I believe this book can help others in the same situation I was.

I ordered this book when I was applying for Life Insurance, based on the investment strategy in Douglas Andrew's book, "Missed Fortune 101". I wanted to review another reference on life insurance to learn more about it, and to corroborate Andrews' strategy. This is the only other book I could find that discussed LI from a financial investment perspective. This is a very comprehensive book about LI. It's a large book, and so far I've only read portions, skipping around to the areas I needed to understand the type of policy I was applying for, and to justify in my mind that indeed it was the right one for me (I'm working with a financial planner who recommended a particular plan, and has largely focused his practice on Doug Andrews' strategy). This book gave me a lot of the information I needed to ask my agent questions about my policy. In fact, he was impressed with my questions and wanted the name of this book.

This is a very easy to read book, with plenty of *understandable* tables as examples. I have also found it to be very objective, discussing the tradeoffs of the different types of policies, and discussing in what personal situations a particular policy might be best. The intent of this book is clearly educational - there's no hidden agenda or bias that I can detect. The author has CFP, CLU, and CHFC credentials.

Finally, and very importantly, this author stresses the need to manage your life insurance policy over time, as you would any other investment - especially the flexible aspects of policies, and including, where necessary, 1035 transfers to a more appropriate policy.

This book is a must read, for anyone attempting to accumulate significant amounts of wealth and ample case reserves for a secure retirement. Once you grasp the full understanding of how best to pay for Life Insurance, the hardest part may be finding a qualified Financial Advisor to assist you over the long run. This is a long term arrangement, one that requires a long term Advisor, to assist you in doing what most people are not capable of doing....accumulating wealth. The book will also be a guide to refer back to, from time to time.

Great way to learn about insurance

The author did a geat job in explaining life insurance products. Those that have panned the book have a built in bias against insurance companies and their salesmen/woman. Fine, but I am waiting for one to write a cogent critique of why the author is wrong in his analysis. Frankly, I haven't found one financial services professional that can, even those that don't sale insurance products. Bottom line, the strategy makes sense for a many if not most folks who are trying to accumulate retirement $$. And yes the insurance industry makes good fees selling their products just like the securities companies make great fees with their products whether they are indexed mutual funds or stocks and bonds. I simply consider this the cost of doing business and move on. So what if someone makes some money helping you have a more comfortable retirement. Read it, take the ideas seriously, and incorporate the ideas into your plan. I have.

Just okay. Need a better book out there!

Here are some specific comments that might help you if you're thinking of buying this book:
1) I like the layout and ease of use. The drills seem to match what the College Board has released in their 4 practice tests.
2) The book clearly went to press before some changes were made by the College Board. It includes information that is not up-to-date (e.g. they reference a 4-point Extended Thinking question which the College Board is not going to use. They will still have some Item Sets, but each question is worth 1 point.)
3) I think they overuse their Plugging In and PITA strategies. Although a few questions (2-3) in the practice tests released by the College Board could be solved this way, this book solved every single contextual question in the Heart of Algebra Drill 3 this way. It is clearly not the fastest way to answer these questions, especially if they appear in the No Calculator section of the test. Also, they explained the strategies using questions that look more like the old SAT. They did, at least, also say you could solve the questions algebraically and offered a (weak) explanation.
4) In the introduction, they mention that the math test will be divided into a Calculator and No-Calculator section, but they make absolutely no distinction as to which questions in the practice drills might wind up where, until the very last domain - Additional Topics in Math.
5) The explanations are a bit weak - no real strategies, but rather just the basic steps to arriving at the answer. I don't think this would help my granddaughter who struggles with math.
6) There is no mention of the Formula page in the math sections. Students need to be reminded that the formulas are given on the test and that they should refer to it rather than trying to memorize all the formulas.
7) There are VERY few Grid-In questions to practice.
8) I think every SAT practice book should come with at least one full-length practice test and a scoring guide, even if the scores are only an estimate.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

As an SAT tutor for the last 22 years, and one who has weathered the storms of previous SAT revisions, I found nothing of value in this book. Purchase or download the official College Board materials. Do not use poor imitations of the new tests like these. The strategies listed for reading are practically non-existent and the readings fail to come close to the complexity of the new passages that are often drawn from 19th century and 20th century writing.

When this book first came out it was really the most up to date there was. It included a lot of great drills and information that we needed on the SAT. Now that the official guide has come out, this one is a little outdated. I do not suggest that you buy this one now, choose a newer version.

One of the Finest in its Genre

This text is quite a gem. The chapters do not need to be studied sequentially, as the authors wrote
so as to create each chapter as independent from the others as possible. Within chapters, the separate sections
are also somewhat independent. The pace in each chapter starts slowly and simply, and then quickens
to more advanced material. Emphasis is placed on underlying principles throughout. Problem sets are also creatively
arranged,from the simple progressing to more advanced. Highlights include a beautiful first chapter on sequences and series,
chapter two on nonlinear differential equations is a treat, and chapter six on vector field theory is crystal clear.
An appendix compares Riemann to Lebesgue Integration in a simple manner. Each Chapter in this text is a delight.
I would be remiss if I did not single out the Chapter Seven, pertaining to Partial Differential Equations: Simply put, one
of the best single-chapter introductions to be encountered. D'Alambert's formula derived, Laplace and Dirichlet problems
discussed, Solutions by Integrals Transforms and Green's Functions expounded with the utmost of clarity (All in 100 Pages).
Merely a thorough foundation of calculus is prerequisite.

Classical Applied Mathematics Text

I have this text (and its like new) from back in my University days. Although not a prescribed textbook it always got me out of trouble in advanced engineering maths. Its a classical text on Applied Mathematics. Along with Boas Mathematical methods in the Physical Sciences I give them both 5 stars.

Still a classic

I ordered a new copy of this book after losing my original from university days. I have found it occasionally invaluable in engineering for twenty years - basically "everything you ever wanted to know about math" in a relatively compact text, without being one of those huge and awful multi-author collection "handbooks". The fact that it is still in print from the 1960's bears out that I am not the only one with this opinion.
