History is really the playground

This latest installment has probably been my favorite in this comic series, and although I think the series hasn't been very stimulating, I never get tired of seeing new assassin outfits in different countries and eras. Egypt is no exception.

The book itslelf is a beautiful piece of work and a great edition to your Assassins Creed collection. I had the first three so this was a great way to continue it. No spoilers but I would consider this world different from the video game world, with a cooperative Desmond. (since he's always whining in the game)

The Best Introductory Text in Systems Biology

As someone who has been working in systems biology since before the term was even coined, I can be pretty critical of any nascent texts on the subject, now that academic biology departments are starting to give the field its proper due. But part of the problem in the field, all the way back to May and Morowitz, is that the obscure and esoteric mathematics of dynamical systems theory has been inaccessable to most classical biologists, let alone to the public. Fields such as bioinformatics have made clear the importance of mathematics and computational science to biology, but the world of modeling and simulation has remained on the edges of biology only until recently.

Most texts on systems biology have tended to focus on the mathematics without much more. Here is a book that tries something rather bold, to address the whole expanse of systems biology, with a minimalist mathematical approach, and a more a practical perspective on real world application. If you are a biologist looking for a first look at systems biology that does not assume you dream in Lyapunov exponents, this is the book for you. It is well illustrated with an almost historical context providing perspective on the field and just enough math to pique your interest without scaring you away. If you fancy yourself a Ramanujan, there are a number of great books that dive into the mathematical abyss with abandon, such as Armin Fuchs' text. But if you are new to the application of dynamical systems theory to biology and to mathematical and computational modeling of the same, then this is your "start here" users manual road map for the more partiuclar detail you will need once you are hooked. This is the perfect book for an introductory upper division undergraduate or preliminary graduate course in systems biology.

An Exceptional Book!

This is a powerful introduction to systems biology from one of its internationally recognized leaders. The book presents the origins, concepts, tools, state of the art, and future directions in systems biology research. One of the book's many outstanding features is its real emphasis on both "systems" and "biology." On one hand, it highlights the principles and general advantages of the systems-oriented approach and mathematical modeling in (molecular) biology. On the other hand, it shows how concrete biological questions and phenomena (from cellular signal transduction to heart physiology) motivate and drive modeling research. The book's other features include its accessibility, balanced and highly relevant selection of material, highlights of the connection between modeling and experimental data, and suitability for audiences with mathematical or biological backgrounds. The reader can also choose between more introductory or more advanced levels of exposition. For example, Chapter 5 "Parameter Estimation" is a helpful reference even for a seasoned systems biology scientist. Yet, Chapter 6 "Gene Systems" starts with a description of the basic building blocks of life and then proceeds to discuss current experimental methods of gene expression analysis. Several areas addressed in the book have been advanced by the author's own research, which obviously adds to the book's overall value. While the book is mainly focused on deterministic finite-dimensional systems, it conceptually prepares the reader to use other computational frameworks to solve biological problems. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in systems biology.

Short but has some interesting examples

This book, although short, is a fairly good overview of classical mechanics, which emphasizes more recent developments in the theory, such as chaotic dynamical systems. The authors do however remain concrete in their treatment, with real-world examples permeating the text. The details behind the theory of classical mechanics are presented very quickly in the book, and this might make the book difficult to read for students first exposed to mechanics at this level.
Chapter one is an introduction to motion in one dimension. After a brief review of Newton's laws, the authors solve some neat problems dealing with damping forces, one being the frictional force on a drag racer, and the other with aerodynamic drag on a parachute. They also treat the undamped and damped harmonic oscillator, and the discussion is very standard. The authors are careful to point out that some force laws are too complicated to be solved analytically, but that computing methods can be used to solve the cases that are not. Computational approaches are now the rule rather than the exception in problems in mechanics, and this trend will continue in the future.
After a short discussion of energy conservation, the authors introduce motion in three dimensions and give a fairly detailed overview of vector notation. Their approach to tensors though is kind of antiquated, for it motivates them via the outer product, which is reminiscent of the dyadic approach that is currently "out of fashion". The authors also discuss the simple pendulum, but do not of course introduce the elliptic curve solutions that accompany this problem. Such a treatment, however fascinating, would drive this book to a height that would make it inaccessible to the audience of students it addresses. Coupled harmonic oscillators are solved using the normal mode approach.
Lagrangian mechanics is introduced in chapter 3, but not from the standpoint of variational calculus at first. Instead the authors choose to present this formulation via generalized forces. They include a discussion of constraints, and give as an example the simple pendulum with a moving support. Only later do they give the Lagrangian formulation via variational calculus, and do so rather hurriedly. Hamilton's equations are derived, and it is shown (again briefly) how Legendre transformations enter into the formalism of Hamiltonian mechanics.
Conservation principles are then thought of as fundamental in the rest of the book, and the authors use momentum conservation to discuss elastic and inelastic collisions in chapter 4. Angular momentum conservation is then used in chapter 5 to discuss central forces and planetary motion. Kepler's laws are also discussed, and Rutherford scattering is discussed. All of the discussion is pretty standard and can be found in most textbooks on classical mechanics.
Rigid body mechanics makes its appearance in chapter 6, wherein the authors discuss the rotational equations of motion of many-particle systems and rigid bodies. A very brief discussion of gyroscopic mechanics is given, but the authors make up for this by explaining the motion of boomerangs. The discussion is fun to read and should satisfy the curious reader as to why a boomerang returns. And, after a discussion of how to calculate the moment of inertia, the authors give a neat introduction to the physics of billiards and the superball. The latter is a popular physics demonstration and the authors show how its motion differs from an ordinary smooth ball.
The difficult (and controversial) topic of accelerated coordinate systems is treated in chapter 7. The four famous "fictitious" forces are introduced, and to develop the reader's intution on these, the authors give a nice example dealing with the manufacture of telescope mirrors. The casting of the mirrors is a neat illustration of the famous Newtonian water pail experiment. The motion of the Foucault pendulum is also discussed briefly. Then after a discussion of principal axes and Euler's equations, the authors give another neat example, this time dealing with the motion of tennis rackets, which illustrates the motion of a rigid body with unequal principal moments of inertia. The physics of tops is then discussed, and in a manner which makes the underlying physics more intuitive for the reader. The authors make an attempt to understand the motion of the famous tippie-top, but don't really do so. The tippie-top is another popular demonstration in the classroom but its physics has eluded the best attempts, and this treatment is no exception. The flip times that are calculated are not in agreement at all with what is observed in the demonstration.
Chapter 8 is an overview of gravitational physics, and the authors show the effects of a body moving in a non-uniform gravitational field, with an example dealing with the tides. Interestingly, the authors attempt to introduce the general theory of relativity, and do so more at a level of elementary mathematics and arm-waving arguments, but the treatment is suitable at this level. The authors show the difference between the orbits predicted by general relativity and the Newtonian theory, i.e. the famous perihelion advance.
A brief overview of Newtonian cosmology is given in chapter 9, wherein the authors discuss the expansion of the universe and the cosmic redshift. After proving the virial theorem, they discuss the effects of dark matter on the rotations of spiral galaxies and groups of galaxies, which is currently a very hot topic in astrophysics.
The special theory of relativity is treated in chapter 10, and the discussion is very standard. Readers are introduced to relativistic mechanics and some of the counterintuitive physics of the theory.
The last chapter of the book is an introduction to non-linear dynamics and chaos. It is defined as sensitive dependence on initial conditions, although this is not a strong enough condition. The Duffing oscillator is offered as an example of chaotic behavior and the transition to chaos is studied as a function of the driving frequency. This brings up concepts from bifurcation theory, such as the idea of a strange attractor. Numerical analysis plays the dominant role in these theories.

I had studied "Classical Dynamics" by Marion more than 25 years ago. At the time I found Marion to be a difficult leap from the relatively easy first courses. Most of the critism, I suspect, comes from hitting the cold water for the first time. I thought the authors did a good job of explaining the concepts I wanted to review. I do not know how I would have felt if this were a first reading as my textbook 25 years ago. The one suggestion I can make is a plea for more example problems worked in detail. Like most physics students, problem solving is the most difficult task to master and seeing the techniques used by the masters are not to be underestimated. Having spent years looking for the one book from which all is clear on first reading this one does not qualify. But it is a good beginning if you choose to stay in the water.

The Ancient Model, which was maintained in Classical Greece, held that the native population of Greece had initially been civilized by Egyptian and Phoenician colonists and that additional Near Eastern culture had been introduced to Greece by Greeks studying in Egypt and Southwest Asia. Moving beyond these prevailing models, Bernal proposes a Revised Ancient Model, which suggests that classical civilization in fact had deep roots in Afroasiatic cultures.

This long-awaited third and final volume of the series is concerned with the linguistic evidence that contradicts the Aryan Model of ancient Greece. Bernal shows how nearly 40 percent of the Greek vocabulary has been plausibly derived from two Afroasiatic languages-Ancient Egyptian and West Semitic. He also reveals how these derivations are not limited to matters of trade, but extended to the sophisticated language of politics, religion, and philosophy. This evidence, according to Bernal, confirms the fact that in Greece an Indo-European people was culturally dominated by speakers of Ancient Egyptian and West Semitic.

About the Author

Mark Guzdial is a professor in the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. He is one of the founders of the ACM’s International Computing Education Research workshop series. Dr. Guzdial’s research focuses on learning sciences and technology, specifically, computing education research. His first books were on the programming language Squeak and its use in education. He was the original developer of “Swiki” (Squeak Wiki), the first wikideveloped explicitly for use in schools. Mark has published several books on the use of media as a context for learning computing, which have influenced undergraduate computing curricula around the world. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of the Learning Sciences and Communications of the ACM. He was a recipient of the 2012 IEEE Computer Society Undergraduate Teaching Award. He is a Senior Member of the ACM.

 

Barbara Ericson is a research scientist and the director of Computing Outreach for the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. She has been working on improving introductory computing education since 2004. She has served as the teacher education representative on the Computer Science Teachers Association board, the co-chair of the K-12 Alliance for the National Center for Women in Information Technology, and as a reader for the Advanced Placement Computer Science exams. She enjoys the diversity of the types of problems she has worked on over the years in computing including computer graphics, artificial intelligence, medicine, and object-oriented programming. Mark and Barbara received the 2010 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Award for Outstanding Computer Educator for their work on Media Computation including this book. They led a project called “Georgia Computes!” for six years, which had a significant impact in improving computing education in the US state of Georgia [3]. Together, they Mark and Barbara are leaders in the Expanding Computing Education.

best python as a first language book so far

This book achieves both of the things you would want a Python as a first language book to do - it engages the beginner with things they might actually want to do, but doesn't fail to introduce the deeper concepts that are needed to come to appreciate the beauty and elegance of Python.

Focusing on computing applications in the arts, this book uses a clever approach to enable the beginner to do really interesting stuff, very quickly. There are things in there that would be of interest to any photographer, not just a software beginner.

Yes, Photoshop is faster and easier, but it hasn't got this level of control! If you ever wanted to write your own Photoshop plugins, this book might be of interest just as an alternative way to get to design your own effects.

The end of the book gets carried away, trying to pack too much in. It tries to explain OOP and Swing, HTML, Javascript and SQL. I think this is too much to get into one book, and if you are working through the text yourself without any mentors you should probably not give yourself too much grief if you don't get all the way through it.

Admittedly, it is also pretty darned expensive.

Otherwise great stuff! This book fills a gaping hole in the Python literature. If you are an intelligent beginner, it is a great place to get started in getting real control over your computer!

Very Nice Hands-on Multimedia Book for Learning Python

Not knowing Python, I read the book from cover to cover, doing many of the examples as interactive exercises. The book comes with a CD and includes a bunch of files (.jpg, .wav, .html) to experiment with (same files as the examples in the book). So, right off the bat, the reader is engaged in the material.

The CD that comes with the book runs on any PC and is easy to install and use. Because it's a multimedia-based book and self-study course, you get to do neat things like:

- manipulate images (.jpg files): understand bit representations of colors in a pixel, loop through pixels in an image, change colors in a photo, create a sunset (darken, lighten), convert to grayscale, remove red eye, repair photos, perform mirroring (symmetry in a photo)

- manipulate sounds (.wav files): understand the bit representation of sounds; view signals; change the volume; sample sounds at various rates; create echoes; splice sounds together; and learn a bit about compression, MP3, and MIDI

- manipulate strings and html pages: scrape Web pages for specific data and create your own Web pages based on the data you've pulled from other pages, perform string searches, work with files, deal with lookup tables (dictionaries) to act as primitive databases

- manipulate videos (series of .jpg images): there are tools on the CD that let you create simple animations (including fade outs and chroma key) and see how a stream of images combines to form a simple 3-second video

Overall, it's a great book, and a fun way to learn programming.

strong image analysis

Guzdial teaches Python from the angle that you want to use it to easily manipulate various types of multimedia files. The files might contain images, sounds, video or even just plain text. This gives some of you extra motivation to learn the material.

Along the way, you can learn how images are encoded in JPG, and how colours are represented, either in RGB or HSB. There is a fair amount of image analysis and modifications that can be easily done in Python. This does not approach the sophistication of what Photoshop provides. But being able to do a lot yourself, instead of invoking canned Photoshop routines, might appeal to you.

Audio manipulation is also covered, though perhaps not as extensively. There are more specialised audio tools available elsewhere, especially for music synthesis.

The discussion of movies is very weak. Due to the complexity of what is required. Here I suggest you turn to what Apple and others offer.
