No good for craft shows!!!

Like many scrollers I do craft shows to pay for my hobby. I bought this book as a pattern book to make the puzzles for craft shows. Since I bought it online I did not discover until I received it there was a statement inside the cover explaining you cannot make anything in the book for profit.

If you want to make them just for fun it is a great book but many of the projects are very involved so I probably never will invest the time to make them since I usually make one for my son and then extras for craft shows. This book will probably just sit on my shelf and I'll work on other projects I can make multiples of.

I really wish a review like this one was posted when I ordered if I had known I could not use the patterns for craft shows I would not have bought the book.

I bought this book about 25 years ago and still regret giving it away. At that time, I did not own a band saw that worked, jigsaw, drill press, or any kind of sanding equipment. All I had was my Delta Unisaw, several good blades and a Craftsman Molding Cutter Head with a lot of cutters. I still have them today.

I certainly did not want to cut patterns like these with a coping saw and scrape and sand away at it until the edges were 90 degrees. That would require a lot of time and elbow grease. Oh, I did own an old three wheel Delta band saw, but I could never get it to work correctly. The blade kept drifting to the right or left. That is when I bought Mark Duginske's book called the "Band Saw Handbook." After working on the saw for some time, I up and finally gave the book away with someone who bought the 3-wheeler saw. Looking back, I think something was wrong with the tilt mechanism on the upper wheel.

Now here we are approximately 25 years since I gave it away, with all the equipment I'll ever need. The book,"How to make Animated Toys is back in my hands again, I'm ready to begin making these toys.

I don't know if it is fate, karma, or whatever, but I now have 2 grandchildren. Both of them are boys. Noah, the oldest, he is now 20 months old, and Liam, is barely 3 months old. With the 40 years of woodworking experience I now have, I guess it was not time for me to begin building them.

These wooden toys are so well put together, it is going to be hard for my 20 month old to tear it apart and Liam will enjoy the same toys Noah did. They are that well built. If they are to last, these toys have to be built out of the right materials and assembled correctly with the best glue possible.

Greatest toy book of all time

I have his later book, but he uses some metal in the hinges in that one. This is the best book on my shelf and the kids adore the dinosaurs. The pegs actually work MUCH better and it's more in keeping with "wooden toy". I have tried about 70% of the toys in the book and they have all worked well. The Pteronanodon is probably the most difficult to get the pitman arms just right so it flaps it's wings easily. Some of the toys are for beginners; some are only for the very skilled. Detail is sufficient to complete the toys if you start with some easier ones you learn the techniques that are perhaps not derailed as well in the harder toys.

About the Author

Dr Stephen Olvey is Medical Director of the new Grand Prix Masters series. Prior to this he was Medical Director for Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in the USA, having served in that position from 1978 to 2003. In this capacity he helped save Alex Zanardi’s life – hence Alex’s foreword to the book.

Fantastic book for open wheel race fanatics..

Dr Steve Olvey has done a wonderful job at putting us behind the sceens in a place only a few ever know about. This is not a book for the faint of heart, it tells it like it is. The men and women who are first response and emergency meds are to be commended for the amazing work they do. Many owe their lives to the Rapid Response they have received, and the fans owe a debt of gratitude for keeping our heroes of the race racing another day.

NOT JUST FOR RACING ENTHUSIASTS

This book was written by one of the 2 doctors who have rescued drivers in the Indy Car racing series for many years.

As someone who has followed Indy racing for many, many years, I was fascinated to read how medical procedures were developed to take care of the injuries specific to Indy Car drivers. It was fascinating also to see how many of these procedures then were used in day-to-day medical rescue care.

Not for everybody, but I found it fascinating and drivers should be thanksful for the author's work!

Life or Death in the Crash Zone

I was glued to my seat, um, the page. The book was hard to put down once I got into it. It revealed how little I knew about the behind the scenes effort of the safety crews involved at race venues around the globe. And here I thought I was a well informed race fan! The medical center "turf Wars" by the hospital staffs was a shocker, especially given the severity of injuries and consequences of surgical methods that could end a driver's career in an instant.

If you are a race fan, you will enjoy this book.

 “The Automotive Body” consists of two volumes.

 

The first volume produces the needful cultural background on the body; it describes the body and its components in use on most kinds of cars and industrial vehicles: the quantity of drawings that are presented allows the reader to familiarize with the design features and to understand functions, design motivations and fabrication feasibility, in view of the existing production processes.

About the Author

Lorenzo Morello received his degree in Mechanical Automotive Engineering in 1968 at the Politecnico of Turin. He immediately began his career at the Politecnico as Assistant of Machine Design and Technologies.

Leaving the Politecnico in 1971, went to work at a branch of Fiat dedicated to vehicle studies, one that has been joined to the new Research Centre in 1976. He participates in the development of cars and experimental prototypes for the ESV US Program. He has also developed mathematical models for vehicle suspensions and road holding simulations.

Since 1973 he has been involved in a major project for the development of mathematical modeIs of the vehicle, to address the product policies of the company in facing the first energy crisis; as part of this activity he began the development of a new automatic transmission for reduced fuel consumption and a small direct injection diesel engine to be used on automobiles.

Dr. Morello was appointed manager of the chassis department of the Vehicle Research Unit and has coordinated the development of many research prototypes, such as electric cars, off-road vehicles, trucks and buses. He was appointed manager of the same Research Unit in 1977 and has been leading a group of about 100 design engineers, dedicated to the development of prototypes. A new urban bus with unitized thin steel sheet body, with spot welded joints, a commercial vehicle that will start production later, a small lightweight urban car, under contract from the National Research Council, and a hybrid car, under contract from the US Department of Energy, were developed in this period of time.

He took responsibility of the Engine Research Unit in 1980; this group, of about 200 people, was primarily dedicated to the development of new car engines. He has managed the development of many petrol engines according to the principle of high turbulence fast combustion. A direct injection diesel engine for cars, many turbocharged pre-chamber diesel engines, a modular two cylinder car engine and many other modified prototypes. He was appointed Director of Product Development in 1983; this position includes all applied research activities on Vehicle Products of Fiat Group. The Division included about 400 people, addressed to power train, chassis and bodies studies as well as prototype construction.

Dr. Morello joined Fiat Auto in 1983, to take responsibility for the development of new automotive petrol engines and the direct injection diesel (the first in the world for automobile applications). He was appointed Director for Powertrain Engineering in 1987; the objective of this group was to develop all engines produced by Fiat Auto brands. The most important activity in this period was the development of the new engine family to be produced in Pratola Serra, which included more than 20 different engines.

At the end of his career, he returned to vehicle development in 1994, as director for Vehicle Engineering; this group was addressed to designing and testing bodies, chassis components, electric and electronic systems, wind tunnels, safety center and other facilities.

Dr. Morello retired in 1999 and started a new activity as consultant to the strategic planning of Elasis, a new company in the Fiat Group, entirely dedicated to vehicle applied research.

Along with Fiat Research Center he participated in the planning of courses for the new Faculty on Automotive Engineering of the Politecnico of Turin, and prepared related lecture notes. He was contract professor of Vehicle System Design and has been contract professor of Automotive Transmission Design since 2001 at the Politecnico of Turin and the University of Naples.

What comes next after you've conquered the world?

"On the three-hundredth anniversary of my birth, I finally managed to conquer the world."

So starts Perfect State, a clever little sci-fi story about reality, emperors, and dating. The main character, God-Emperor Kairominas, was surprisingly easy to relate to, even though, as of the quarter-century anniversary of my birth, I have yet to conquer anything. The other characters don't get much time to shine, but Shale and Bask made good use of their appearances and I liked both of them a great deal.

The story is fast paced and humorous, though the ending gets a little... serious. However, it is a really short story (about 71 Kindle pages). Calling it a "novella" feels misleading. To me, novella implies a short novel. Perfect States is really just a short story. I would have purchased it regardless, but would have preferred to know how short it was beforehand (NOTE: when I purchased the book and at the time I wrote the review, the page count for this story had not been posted).

The only Sanderson work I don't like

I feel bad giving this such a low rating as Sanderson is my favorite living fantasy author, but I really didn't like this one. The plot had an interesting premise but I found the interaction between Kairominas and Sophie cringeworthy, which is terrible because Brandon normally writes such great female characters. It took me out of the story and the resolution, which was unexpected, wasn't enough to redeem it for me. I found myself wandering what on earth the point was at the end.

Quick and enjoyable read

Great quick read. I'm not a fast reader and it took me a couple hours tops. Brandon Sanderson has an incredible talent for writing books that look effortless. The ideas and storyline in the beginning are complex but I knew it would come together the more I read and it did.

*Beginning of possible spoiler (it's scene setting not plot revealing)*. Its set in a Matrix-esq world (think brains in jars) and each brain (Person) gets their own stimulated world (everyone else in that world is a program with a concept) built around them. The Person that the world is built around can interact with other real People in Border States but our Main Character doesn't do that much. Also, the real person is told that they are in a stimulation when they reach age 50 by what is known as the Wode.

The premise is intriguing and fun and the story takes us on an adventure where the main character is pushed to do some self discovery. I definitely recommend this and any book by Brandon Sanderson. He always leaves me wanting more. I am ready for the next installment of Perfect State!! If you are familiar with Sanderson's other work it has the same flow as the two Legion books. It is a very short read and it is absolutely incredible what Brandon Sanderson accomplished in so few pages. If I had a book club I would love to go over this book with them. I have questions!! Any book that leaves me thinking about the plot long after I read it is something to be cherished. Keep on writing Mr. Sanderson! Oh and for any parents out there - it does touch upon sex. Read first so you can decide if you want to pass it along.

Good For The Uninitiated, Somewhat Dubious For The Rest

The book was worth the money paid. It will stay in my library. It did grab my interest a few times. But, it in no way compares to The Age Of Arthur, by Morris, which to my mind is the definitive book yet, in this field, and those who were left disappointed by this book should seek out Morris' book! Holy Kingdom will seem a good enough book to those not so widely read as others, otherwise it doesn't add much more than a few good ideas. Though sometimes interesting there wasn't anything "explosive" about the book. The suggested locations of Arthur's grave and Camelot, though argued well, still didn't provide anything irrefutable. I found their theories about the plagues and comet tails interesting, but old, by the time I read it. This book, unlike Morris', follows the growing trend of one individual and a few others, conversing, putting forth hypothesis' and exploring probabilities amongst themselves, and putting such things to paper. It is `conversational' in that, this is the kinds of things pseudo-intellectuals talk about around the fireplace, smoking their pipes. It is not an academic work, by any means, for an academic, bound by scholarly-essay conventions could have done in 100 pages what they do in 400+. Much of their text, extraneous, would have been excised, or reduced to a series of end-notes. This should have been as short as King Arthur: The True Story by Philips and Keatman. If you've read a dozen books on this topic, skip Holy Kingdom. If you're just starting to explore this field and haven't read much, this is as good an introduction - with its negatives and positives - as any. As a philosophic travelogue, I would give it five stars. As a piece of scholarship, I would give it two stars. Lets just call it three stars average.

Mind boggling!

What a book. I mean where have Wilson and Blackett been all my life? Their book is excellent with cogent argument, the power of years of on-site research and clear identification of source material.
Forget Morris, Ashe and Alcock. The latter had to admit that all the sites around the supposed "camelot", Cadbury Hill, Somerset, were forged in the 1500s by John Leland. A casual glance at Wilson and Blackett's chapter on "The Glastonbury Hoax" plus some research of my onw indicated that the "Glastennen" referred to in ancient Manuscripts dated to circa 250 AD. The fake tourist and music festival site of Glastonbury, Somerset, was founded in 941, so it can't be the same place!
Wilson and Blackett are really onto something and this book is but the tip of their particular iceberg. No wonder David Ford, Robert Vermaat and friends are panicked. Take away the Avalon and "mystical Arthur" material so favoured by the dreamers and you get to the truth.
That truth, about the real Arthurian Dynasty of the ancient Britons, warts n all, is for all to read. I do hope people will get their copy soon, to avoid disappointment!

A great book on ancient British history

I really enjoyed reading The Holy Kingdom and although I'd be interested to read more about Prince Madoc in America this book acts as a great introduction to the work of Alan Wilson and Baram Blackett's Ancient British Historical Project.
I am heartened that the Holy Kingdom is now available in the USA; this project is of immense significance and if we are to flesh out the history of Madoc and Arthur in America in the sixth Century then we need to know where we're coming from...
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It does indeed seem as if Adrian Gilbert caught on to Wilson and Blackett rather late and had an editorial role, whereas they have done all the meaningful research.
Let's hope this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the publishers and these British historians. Rich in detail, racy in its commentary and sober in its reflection, The Holy Kingdom takes you to the sites of every relevant King Arthur story and even provides a twist in the tale in its debunking of the current Glastonbury hoax...
This is a great book, in so many ways...

About the Author
Petko Bahovski received a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and a Master’s degree in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis University, Boston. From 1994 to 1999, Petko began to build his banking career by working at American Express, ING Bank, Baring Asset Management and Chase Manhattan Bank. From 1999 to 2008 he worked with JPMorgan, the largest bank in the US, as an investment banker based in New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore. Petko was responsible for the delivery of emerging markets products to Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia, travelling extensively in these regions to meet clients from private banks, pension funds, insurance companies and asset managers. In 2008 he moved to Switzerland, where he is still based, in order to become a private banking expert. From 2008 to 2012, Petko managed teams of private bankers at Credit Suisse, the second largest Swiss private bank, and at Coutts, one of the world’s oldest banks and wealth managers. His focus was on Russia, Ukraine and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), serving private banking clients in those countries. At present Petko advises banks on how to build their private banking strategy, and also provides consultation services for individual clients on private banking-related matters.

Decoding Private Banking services

This is a well thought out and concise book on how to choose a Private Bank. It is structured in a very user friendly way, where each chapter provides a good overview of the issues to consider and then after each chapter there is a check list highlighting the things you should be seeking answers to as you go through the selection process.

This book goes through a vast number of issues that should be contemplated when selecting, spanning all the way from asset allocation, personal situation, retirement goals and all the way to fee structures. It is all explained to provide the reader with a good overview and without assuming the reader has any previous finance experience.

"How to Choose a Private Bank" should be read by anyone who uses a Private Bank and not only by people who is looking to select a new Private Bank. After reading this book you will have a better understanding of what services you should expect from a Private Banker and how much you should be paying for these services.

The author clearly have significant experience, but the book is unbiased towards any specific banks and when reading this book you get a sense that the author has written the book after having underwent a Private Bank selection process himself instead of a Private Banker who is trying to sell you on how fantastic Private Banking services are.

Great collection of advice

The book offers a very detailed overview of private banks, and is geared primarily to PB/PWM customers (naturally), but can certainly be useful for anyone in the industry. The book is very organized, and is broken down into 24 chapters, like a textbook. Each chapter covers its own topic, and together the text becomes a very enlightening set of tips and examples. The author clearly explains how the system works inside the banks, shows that there are differences and what they are in every aspect of selecting a bank and the banker. He illustrates that there is no single bank that will be suitable for all clients, and one should not base the decision solely on the brand name of the bank. Also, the importance of diversification among several banks and countries, and very clear logic behind the diversification. The text is written in a very informal easy-to-read language with no sophisticated terminology. The whole narrative is in a bullet-point format, the impression is that of a power point presentation (in a good way!) where only the most relevant information is presented. Every paragraph is a useful tip with the logic behind it, and an example right after. I loved the relevant examples after each point to make it clear. No unnecessary space-filler sentences. There is a checklist of tips after each chapter, with all checklists compiled at the end of the book. I didn’t notice any bias toward any particular country or bank. Quite the opposite, the author constantly mentions the differences between global markets, and urges to consider your residence country when selecting the bank. The author provides real-life scenarios that are very easy to visualize and relate to, something that will make you think about your future. Very objective and informative view. The author clearly knows the industry from inside-out, and can probably explain all the specifics to a 5-year old. When reading, the impression is not of being sold a product, but being educated by a consultant, which certainly makes the read more comfortable. The ratio of the amount of knowledge gained to word count is very high, so the value of the book is great. Overall, highly recommend to anyone that is related to or planning to be part of private banking / PWM industry - as a client or otherwise.

Very practical private banking guide

This well structured book gives a solid base of what one should be aware of when choosing a private bank. Besides the typical private banking services, the author talks about things like succession planning, securities lending which were new to me and I would find useful in the future. The checklist at the end of each chapter equips the reader with practical questions that could be used when dealing with a private bank.
By reading this book, I got a much better understanding of how banks charge fees. The topic is discussed not only in the fees chapter but also through worked examples in the investment funds, as well as in the chapters portfolio management, discretionary portfolio management, succession planning and active trading.
You should be aware that the book does not give particular investment advice nor does it provide a list of private banks to choose from.
Coming from an Emerging Markets country, I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering to open a private banking account, especially if the bank is outside of their country of residence.

Maybe the editor's invisible hand is too visible?

Layout Essentials: 100 Design Principals for Using Grids doesn't actually deliver design principals, they're just platitudes. Here are some examples: “Avoid crowding,” “Avoid overcrowding,” “Design with ample margins,” “Pack it in.” What the book does deliver is a well-chosen selection of excellent page layouts, most based on applications of grid principals, though a few make you scratch your head. (There is an illustrated compendium of grid layout terms on the first pages.) The author even applies the same principal to the layout and comments of the pages that illustrate the particular principal chosen, so the book design itself is excellent and quite clever.

What the author does not deliver is solutions to today's designers' main challenge: keeping a consistent look and grid design over printed pages, computer screens, and personal device displays. The book is focused almost entirely on printed pages or posters.

Nevertheless, the examples shown are brilliant and inspirational and the author's comments well-taken. Also of note is that many of the designers of the featured examples are women; nice to see a stereotype broken. All in all, the book is well-worth its cost.

How about Technical Content Examples?

Someday, one of these design book authors is going to figure out that there are many more folks doing legal, technical, medical, and financial writing than ever before and guide us to design page layouts that help us reach our readers. The first chapter of this book is fantastic because the grid and its variations are clearly explained. After that, the examples are full-color projects that are really gorgeous. Maybe I am not in the intended audience for this book -my projects are not even printed in color, so black and white examples would have really helped.

There are many great examples using photos, color, and other design elements but not much on how to size them to each other- this is an issue when providing instructions that are accompanied by illustrations. Using the grid, I would have like to see "before and after" examples, a case study, or instruction-with-verification layouts. To conclude, this book is beautifully printed and inspiring, but I definitely did not get what I needed to layout a technical publication with some interesting layout variations.

Learn the Essentials...Avoid Gridlock

Tondreau makes very few assumptions about readers' foreknowledge of grids and as such, jumps right into the fundamentals within the first 20 pages. Tondreau provides a vocabulary for grids that might seem obvious at first (i.e. columns, modules, margins, spatial zones, and flowlines), but also explains complex grid systems (i.e. hierarchical grids, modular, multicolumn) and methodologies for implementing them (i.e. typography, color, media forms, etc). What makes the book interesting and eliminates it from simply being a reference guide is the constant use of real world projects that illustrate the grid principle being addressed as well as a source of inspiration. In addition, the book makes a conscious effort to inform readers that there is a difference between `principles' and `rules' and designers should not 'lock' into a paradigm that stifles creativity.

I strongly recommend that this book be read not only by designers, but by anyone person that builds interfaces that will be viewed by large audiences. It will only improve the quality of the final product.

About the Author
Yu-kai Chou is an Author and International Keynote Speaker on Gamification. He is the Original Creator of the gamification framework: Octalysis, and the author of Actionable Gamification: Beyond Points, Badges, and Leaderboards. He is the Founder of The Octalysis Group and has been a regular speaker/lecturer on gamification worldwide, including at organizations like Google, Stanford University, LEGO, TEDx, SxSW, Gamified India, Huawei, the Innovation Center in Denmark, Kingdom of Bahrain, and many more.
Yu-kai was one of the earliest pioneers in Gamification, starting his work in the industry in 2003. This book is probably the most important and well researched guide to Gamification that is on the market today. If you think Gamification is about gaming stuff them you are dead wrong. It's about how your brain works and is motivated.

I interviewed Yu-kai for the Business Book Talk Podcast and his understanding and depth of knowledge kept me on the edge of my studio seat for over 45 minutes. This is probably one of the best values on Amazon today if you are a business manager, marketing expert or entrepreneur. I can't wait for his next book.

Fantastic manual.

I don't normally write reviews, but I bought this book and I absolutely adore it.

I am an educator who wanted to try to revitalize his classroom. I had bought a few books about gamification, and "Actionable Gamification" stood out fast and far. The other books I got were vague and not helpful. Chou's book gives evidence, cites sources, and lists tangible ways to gamify any project you might be working on. It reads like a how-to manual, rather than some worthlessly optimistic, airy theoretical text.

Chou begins by explaining that there are 8 useful motivating forces, or reasons anyone does anything at all; which Chou calls "Core Drives." Each chapter after this point focuses specifically on one of these forces, how you can use them to your advantage in your projects, and how, if abused, they can be a detriment to your project. He then lists several techniques for that core drive, wraps up the chapter with a thought exercise and a tie in to his website, and moves on to the next core drive.

The book is incredibly easy to understand, well paced, and fun to read. I am excited to use what I learned in this book to go make lesson plans. :)

The best money I've spent all year so far

I'm still not even all the way through but I've gained so, so much from this book. Yu-kai Chou is the absolute EXPERT on this topic and also has led an interesting life in general. His passion for gamification and how real people can use it emanates from every page, and the Octalysis framework is possibly the most interesting and detailed system I've ever read about, on any topic, ever. (And I studied physics, computer science, and business in college!)

As a marketer, copywriter, and storyteller who has basically "heard it all" in terms of psychological triggers, this book continues to astound me and help me level up (pun intended) my mastery of so many functions of my daily work—creating, selling, publishing, and more. Highly recommended.
