Great set of questions, entertaining read.

I picked this up after TED listed it on their Facebook page. I've used "Table Topics", a card deck with similar "Life, the Universe, and Everything" conversation-starter questions. Those are pretty good, but Rothbart took things another step by crowdsourcing questions while on a tour for Found Magazine, to eighty-something cities around the US. He then had a volunteer come up on stage each night, to whom he asked some of the questions. Rothbart's essays about those experiences using the questions, and about other conversations with strangers, add to the quality of the book. The questions are almost all in pictures of the slips of paper they were originally written on, and some are a little hard to read inline -- the contrast is too low -- but are ok once you click and zoom in on them (this is with a 3rd gen Kindle, with keyboard). I read this in about an hour with breaks to ask my wife some of the questions. Worth the three bucks just for her answers.

Young, refreshing, invigorating

This is an amazing book. I loved every page of it. Young, refreshing, invigorating. I live in a big City and it can be quite hard to make new friends serendipitously, there's so much stuff vying for people attention and an encounter with a guy or a girl that results in superficial chit chat just results in texts not replied to, people bailing on social events etc... Why would theuy hang out to you? You're just on of millions of people in a metropolitan area and there's so much stuff to do. Frustrating but understandable.
Since I've been using these questions I get more texts, I get more friends on social media, more people commenting on my posts on Facebook etc, not to mention the hilarious conversations you can have. It' s great that there's such a book right now as I've always been interested in this stuff but the only stuff available is books by Leil Lowndes that seem to focus on normal getting-to-know conversation that everyone engages in.
Davy, please publish a follow up book with more questions if you can !

In 1950 Alan Turing proposed a famous test: if a respondent could not be certain whether an exchange of messages was from a human or a machine, then the machine might be considered to be intelligent. In the mid 1960s, Joseph Weizenbaum wrote the Eliza chatbot program to challenge the validity of Turing's proposed test. Eliza simply responded to trigger words from a lexicon of prewritten phrases.
